68 Wiper arms?

I'm refinishing my eary 68's wiper blade holders and arms. The judging manual states that both the wiper blade's holder and arm are painted flat black. The blade holders on my car appear to be bare stainless steel when cleaned. There is no black over spray inside the holders. When cleaning the holders I just removed some body paint that was on them. The arms appear to be semi-gloss black. Can anyone tell me what is original?

For what it is worth, my 68 has wiper mechanism and arms painted "Flat Black."

In this era wiper metal parts were blacked out by the supplier (Trico) to eliminate reflective glare. There may be discussion as to whether the process was paint vs. a black anodize, but you can duplicate using an off-the-shelf spray paint like SEM's self-etching black primer. Blacked out components include the wiper arms, the blade holders as well as the SS latch-lock 'rails' surrounding the refill rubber.

The arms and blade holders should be flat black oxide or flat black paint. It sounds like you are talking about the metal retainer strip which is attached to the wiper refill as being stainless. At a recent meet I was told by a master judge that even the metal portion of the refill should be black.

That is why the judging manual says "There is no chrome or shiny surface visible."
