Big block oil capacity

After my 1968 L71 rebuild I'm finding the oil dip stick no longer is correct. It shows way over FULL and I have drained the oil and put a fresh 5qts and a new oil filter in just in case the builder might have made a mistake, but it still reads the same.

The oil pan and dip stick assembly are all original parts.. so...

Any Ideas?

Steve, Is this after running the engine? I have found on my original '71 LS5 that if I put in a full 6 quarts, it will show slightly over the "FULL" mark. I ususally give it about 5 1/2, always filling the filter with oil so I can get pressure as quikcly as possible after starting the engine.

Yes, I filled the filter and then put in the other 5qts. Even after running the engine it still reads WAY over Full.

I was thinking maybe the machine shop gave me the wrong dip stick or dip stick tube. The oil pan looks the same (But I don't know that for sure) Does anyone have any specs (sizes) of these Items so I might measure them?

I hate running a brand new rebuild and NOT knowing for sure if I have the correct amount of oil. What happens if you overfill?
