Tony, I like your style. Cars are for driving.

I had a '63 340 HP SB Convertible when I was in high school. At 16, you think nothing of doing burnouts even though you don't know or care what the consequences may be.

Repeated burnouts, particularly at high rpm will do extensive damage to your car. Damage that I experienced included repairs to the rear "pumpkin", U-joints, clutches and throw-out bearings. Also blew a synchro and needed to rebuild the transmission. By the time I sold the car after a couple of years of this abuse, the engine was smoking, which I attribute to a life spent at high RPMs. Of course some of this damage may have been caused by repeated power shifting as well. The two seem to go together. In addition there was the replacement of tires.

I thought it was great at the time. I think its pretty dumb now but if you are having fun with it, more power to you. All I ask is that you be careful. I have seen some pretty close calls from people burning out at car shows, crusie ins, etc and have heard some bad stories. I am sure you would not want to injure someone or damage their car.

In my opinion, if you like that kind of driving, you would be better off with a car that has a solid rear axle. They seem to be able to handle the stress of burnouts better than the Corvette's IRS. Again, just my opinion.

Solid rear axles probably do stand up better, but can have issues too - reference the article I wrote several years ago for the Restorer about my first hot rod (a GTO) and the first night I had the car. I had just dropped off my buds after a night of cruising, and was rolling backwards out of his driveway and he yelled for me to do a burnout - rev'd her to 5 grand, dropped the clutch while still rolling backwards and exploded the rear end! The spyder gears had no teeth remaining... too much drivetrain slack, which was instantaneously taken up with explosive force... A real bummer for a high school kid the first night he owns his car.
