    69 hood latches

I would like to refinish my hood latches. The female side of the latches are painted black and don’t match the grey-like male side. Any recommendations on refinishing techniques or products?

    John-----

The 1969 hood latches, upper and lower, were originally finished with a "black phosphate" finish. No part was originally painted, although some chassis blackout MAY have gotten applied to part of one. I really doubt it though, as I think that the blackout was applied before the latches were installed. Actually, this finish is usually more gray than black, but it's a "chalkboard-like", rough feeling finish. The main portions of all of the brackets were finished this way. The only exceptions were the spring retainers (caps) on the lower latches and the spring on the upper latch.

This finish is very hard to duplicate. The part needs to be completely stripped of the existing finish prior to re-finishing. There are "plating kits" on the market which claim to be able to re-apply this finish, but I've never used one.

      Thanks Joe,

After further review of the judging guide, I have located a plating copmany that offers "zink phosphate" (grey) plating services. I may give them a try.

john, i used a eastwood blackening kit. worked super great. only problem is that the parts need to be super clean. when you think you have them clean enough, their not. good luck.

          Bob,

I was looking through their catalog today. I noticed they offer a grey zinc phosphate paint...much cheaper that having them replated. Have you tried any of these products?

I did my '69 hood latches several years ago with the Caswell Plating set-up. They came out terriffic and they are still perfect today. It is very easy to use and seems to last quite well.
            Hope this helps

Paint will look OK for the drive-in, but most judges will spot it. Of course if you do not intend to have the car judged......
