Lost oil pressure, then coolant (bad day)

'54 Corvette, Blue Flame Six. Just rebuilt, stock.

Engine builder said to drive it a little and bring it back for a final valve adjustment. Been a little cold, so the first drive was only about 20 miles. Saturday I take it out, everything seems good so I go out on the interstate. About 12 miles into this adventure, I notice oil pressure isn't as high as usual, its just above 30psi at 3000RPM. Keep an eye on oil pressure. It slowly drops over the next few miles. By the time I get off six miles later (having slowed down and prayed pressure wouldn't go away altogether before the next exit), pressure is below 15psi. Get off, drive over the overpass, shut off engine and coast into the gas station. By the time I shut down, pressure is barely showing on the gauge, though it does drop on shutdown. Nice rattle too. Coast into gas station. In the last 10 feet of the coast, coolant starts blowing out the overflow line. Maybe a quart or so blows out. Temp gauge never climbed above 190 or so, but it is a Bourden (sp?) tube type, accuracy unknown. Smoke coming from the vents on the valve cover.

Checked oil before leaving home. Checked oil after disaster. Clean and full both times. No coolant in the oil, still looks new.

Now the thing is sitting in the garage, and still smells really bad two days later. Burned oil smell?

    What went wrong?

Did the oil pump fail? If so, do they die slowly over several minutes like that?

    Sounds like it got hot.

Yes, it certainly did get hot. However, it got hot on a very cool day (60F maybe) on the highway. Never showed any tendency to overheat before. And a mild overheating event shouldn't cause catastrophic oil pressure loss.

Someone else suggested that the likely cause is an improperly installed bearing wore rapidly. As the clearance opened up, the oil pressure dropped. This certainly fits the symptoms.

Could increased friction due to a bearing going out cause the engine to heat up?

        3in. freeze plug

Wayne I was the editor for SACE and in 1991 Volume 5 #4 I wrote an article just for 53-54 235's about the 3in.freeze plug that %99 of engine shops install while working on a CORVETTE 235 engine. The mistake they make is to install the 3in. freeze plug located at the front of the block. Here is the deal!
The CAR engine water pump is located higher at the front of the block so that the 3in. freeze plug needs to be installed.
BUT corvette lowered the pump to clear the upper Radiator hose and hood causing the freeze plug to be removed. You will not heat up at idel but climbing a hill or at higher speed it will .
So what you need to do is remove the pump and look inside the pump housing to see if they did install the 3in plug. Then you can ether drive it in to the block or remove it. I'll bet you your temp. gage is reading wrong and the freeze plug is there.
Any Q- E-mail me .Remember any one having a CORVETTE 235 engine rebuilt TELL the shop about the freeze plug. I'v met many owners having this problem but for trailer Queens.

Thanks, Roy. I'll have that checked when they get it back in the shop. That would certainly explain the sudden tendency to overheat.

This is more than just a mild case of the hots. It is the classic symtom of the disease. Do what Roy says. Hey, Roy, how about those pictures?
