At the suggestion of a few other C1 owners, I finally did it....removed the wide-whites and original caps....and threw on four 225R70-15(white letters in) with new cragers! The old '58 sits a little higher, is much more stable and ofcourse the ride is nicer & looks mean. Cringed when I did this-I'm such an
original freak. Anyone out there done this? or have I sinned?
I also have two sets of wheels/tires for my '58. One set of chrome "Smoothies" with BF Goodrich RWL radials and one set of 5.5" wheels/small caps and blackwalls for NCRS type events (RPO 276). I switch them on frequent occasion, depending on what "look" I want. Right now I have the RPO 276 wheels on the car. Next week who knows?
You've sinned. For your penance, you must drive the car with the offending wheels out to St. Louis. When you get there, let all the air out of the tires and refill with original St. Louis air. It may be repro or NOS, but no judge can tell the difference. Don't forget the spare. Drive home. Get out your Corvette parts catalogs. Order thousands of dollars of repro parts. You'll be forgiven.
You can have the best of both worlds by using seven inch rims with nubs to hold the stock hubcaps and running seventy series tires for handling. That's what I did with my 60 and I love it.
My '65 coupe rides so much faster (yes, that's faster as well as better) with the TA's and the '67 aluminum wheels. I've even got used to the cool lower stance and far less wheel spin as I run thru the gears. Those repop tires, hub caps, and steel wheels look nice packed away in plastic bags in the back corner of the garage. They can stay there till the next time this '65 see's NCRS judging.
