    Throw out bearing

Before I install a new throw out bearing in my 67 327/350 with close ratio 4 speed, could someone tell me for sure if the throw out bearing is the short or long one. If I had the original I could compare, however, I have lost it over the past 20 years the car set. I installed a short one but it didn't last. I think that was my fault for setting the clutch play too tight. I don't want to do this again so I want to be sure I am doing it right this time.

    Thanks in advance.

    John-----

You need the "short" one. All late 1955 through 1981 Corvettes used the "short" clutch relaease bearing. Originally, your 67 used a bearing that was 1-7/32" overall length. However, this bearing was discontinued years ago and replaced by the 1-1/4" bearing. The 1-7/32" bearings are very difficult to locate and completely uneccessary as the 1-1/4" will work fine. Late 55 through 1963 originally used the 1-1/4" bearing.

        Re: Throw out bearing

        Joe,
I need a new one as well for my 73 M20 (or is it M21?). Since your so good a part numbers, do you happen to have one. Do the dealers still stock it.

Is there an AIM for engines and accessories with part numbers. I have my original shop manual and transmission overhaul(which includes some accessories). But they don't mention part numbers.

        TIA

          Steve-----

The current GM part number for the release bearing is GM #15680264. Some folks like this bearing and some folks don't. However, this style bearing is about the only type that you will find in the marketplace today, whether you purchase GM or aftermarket.

There is no generally available "engine AIM".

            Engine AIM

I brought this subject up a year or two ago because I DO have an engine
AIM for my Cosworth Vega. John Hinckley responded that Flint and Tonawanda
did not have AIMs, but "process sheets", and apparently these have been lost.

The only engine parts that are included in the assembly plant AIMs would be those that were added at the final assembly plant, such as engine accessories and brackets, ignition harnesses, and radio shielding.

Chevrolet prepared an AIM for the Cosworth Vega because it was hand assembled by individual techs rather than going down a conventional assembly line, but
I don't know of any other Chevrolet engines that have their own AIM.

Interesting Duke...I wonder if the original ZL-1 cleanroom assembled engines had an AIM then as well? Probably long gone even if it did exist...Craig

I have a copy of the LT5 AIM, it's actually called----Engine Assembly Manufacturing Sheets---- and is two very full 4 inch three ring binders with lots of color pictures. The parts list is a seperate document. Do you need me to look something up for you?

Flint had "process sheets," but there is an AIM for Tonawanda. At least there is for 1971.
