Got caught in rain for the first time yesterday in my 91 ZR-1. The windshield wipers got tangled up with each other every time they were turned on (except the mist wipe). Anybody had this happen? Did GM put out any TSB on this?

Re: C-4 windshield wipers
Carl:
Yes, it happened to my 1985 when she was about 2 years old. I was on my way to Orlando, from N.Y.on I95, traveling at the speed limit, plus or minus 40MPH (mostly plus), when the skies opened up. I switched on the wipers, and noticed that they momentarily contacted each other, and at that point something jettisoned off of one of the wiper arms. Later that day I saw that the black plastic sheath, which covers/attaches the ws washer tubing to the wiper arm went AWOL. I made a temp repair with electrical tape, and replaced it when I returned home. I also made a very small adjustment to the offending wiper arm to prevent them from contacting in the future.
I was pretty tough on her during the first 10 years, so I have "put her out to pasture", so to speak. I only drive her on fair weather days, when the air quality is "healthy", and ozone levels are low. This is basically to blow the cobwebs out the tailpipes, to clean the fuel line by inducing turbulent flow thru it, and to remove the outer layers of rubber from the rear tires (preventive maintenance!?). I occasionally take her for long drives, to check the operation of the odometer. So, you see, I no longer need windshield wipers, but I can rest, assured that they work properly.

P.S. I don't know if a tech bulletin was issued, or if this was a widespread problem.- Top

The problem occured on my '86 coupe when it was only about two years old. It has never happened since. I believe there is an adjustment you can make but I haven't checked it out since it never happened again.- Top

Re: C-4 windshield wipers
Joe, any info on how you adjusted the arm would be appreciated. My two wiper arms are fighting like two cats in a burlap bag. Car only has 2,000 miles on it, was stored mostly for a long time.Carl Hamilton

Re: C-4 windshield wipers
Carl:
I am sorry, but it has been so long ago, that I honest to God cannot remember how I did it. I have just looked in my 1985 Shop Manual, but did not find any adjustment info for the wiper arms.
Just a couple suggestions:
1. Is the windshield wet when the cats are fighting? As you know, if dry, the wipers will act differently because of the excessive drag.
2. What I MIGHT have done, is remove one wiper arm from the transmission, by releasing the retaining clip, and rotated it by one ridge on the spline.
3. What I MAYBE MIGHT have done, was Bubba (bent) one arm slightly to remove the interferance. If you do resort to this method, just a very tiny bit of persuasion goes a long way.
Good luck,

Re: C-4 windshield wipers
Carl,
To the best of my knowledge, a service bulletin was never released on this problem, but I could be wrong. This subject is covered in our Knowledgebase though. Select the "1984-1996: Windshield Wiper Adjustment" and press the Answer button. Hope this helps.
