    over heating

62 340hp 11.25 comp top flight car at idle will start to over heat. put in a new Dewitt radiator, all new hoses, new fan clutch, new clamps, and have ordered a bottom radiator seals and side seals. Do you have any other suggestions?

    Re: over heating

I know that this issue gets discussed and cussed quite a bit on this forum. If you have replaced all of the components with new, then about the only things that are left in your dianosis is to confirm that it is indeed overheating.

You didn't say how you know it was overheating. If it by looking at a temperature gauge, then you need to independently verify that it is too hot. When my 66 was overheating, I used my wife's candy thermometer, stuick in the aluminum overflow container, to tell me that, yes, it was overheating. The candy thermometer was remarkably close to what I was seeing on the temperature gauge.

Do an archive search and you will probably find lots of our technical gurus giving out some very good advice.

The seals are quite important, especially the side seals. When you state that "it starts to overheat" how hot is it getting. A modest rise in temp at idle on a hot day is probably going to happen. As noted earlier, verify that the temp is actually going up first and foremost. A IR thermometer aimed at the base of the thermostat is the best indication.

Steve- Having done all the right steps, you should check the sender for calibration. Take an ohm meter and measure from the stem of sender to a good
ground on engine at room temparature.Should read at least 650 to 700 ohms. If lower than 600 ohms then it is the sender at fault. Several articles in the
        Restorer cover this subject.(Vol 16 #2 # 4 Vol 25 #4 )

          Re: over heating

My recommendation to all dual-point owners is to swap them with a single point distributor with a vacuum advace matched to the engine's vacuum characteristics, which would be the NAPA/Echlin VC1810 for 097, 346, 151, and 178 camshafts or any aftermarket high performance cam that generates 14" or less manifold vacuum.

'Course, this won't cut the mustard for judging, but it you drive the car
a vacuum advance distributor will result in cooler idle and low speed operation, better low speed throttle response, and better fuel economy if you select the proper vacuum can.

You should be able to install a vacuum advance dist. and find a suitable manifold vacuum source without making permanent modifications, and it should be easy to switch back to the dual-point for judging.

Duke - there you go, pushing the NAPA stock up again. Maybe I better go get another spare VC1810...Craig
