I am about to order the factory blueprint of the GM 3863143/3904362 street mechanical camshaft for my 66 427/425 engine buildup. The FM/Speedpro part for the camshaft is CS-165R, I can get it locally for $93 special order at a speed shop, and through Summit for $86 via special order. According to the local speed shop, two solid lifters are available, AT992, the standard solid lifter, for $49.76 special order, or, race version, AT840R, same price, special order. Summit only offers the latter part, and lists it at $5.32 EACH, or $85 a set. Something sounds wrong in the pricing, or there is a much more attractive set price. Also, the race version at Summit says adjustable fixed lifter. Does this mean you can adjust the lifter to control your setting versus the rocker arm fulcrum nut so it can be used with fixed/net lash applications such as Gen V and VI? I don't need this...anyone out there know the best way to go? seems like the Std lifter through my speed shop would be a better way to go. The other option is to get the Crane aftermarket blueprint through GM, as a kit. I am just not sure if Crane quality is up to the Federal Mogul standards...thoughts?...thx!...Craig

Re: Federal Mogul/Speed Pro BB Solid Cam
AT 992 are OEM piddler valve lifters, the AT840R lifters are edge orifice type lifters and should only be used with roller rockers because they cut down on the oil supply to the rockers by 25%. for steet engines i would stay with the AT992 even if you use roller tipped rockers to keep the valve spring cool with the oil.- Top

Re: Federal Mogul/Speed Pro BB Solid Cam
Agree with Clem that the piddle valve lifters should be used on BBs with
OEM rockers. All the OEM BBs with mechanical lifter cams used the piddle valve type.
It's okay to use the edge orifice type with SBs. All the Duntov-cammed SBs from 57 to 63 used the edge orifice type. Chevrolet switched to the piddle valve type for the 30-30 cam as used on 64-65 SHP/FI engines and also on 302 CID Z-28s, but begining in '70 they switched back to the edge orifice type on the 350 LT-1/Z-28 engine with the 178 cam.

Re: Federal Mogul/Speed Pro BB Solid Cam
Thx Clem and Duke - I am familar with both lifter types, I didn't realize that was the distinction between the two numbers in the speed pro line. I defiintely want piddle valve... what do you guys think of with respect to the FM/Speed Pro vs aftermarket Crane through GM perf parts route...any personal views? I have read on this board about the variances in lobe lift, degrees, and base circle issues and some of these are not exact copies. I doubt Crane does anything special for GM release as a kit, their performance parts catalog list them and aftermarket supply... I really wanted a GM cam, but have looked high and wide and can locate one unless you know of some leads on what vendors may have any....GM has discontinued the 3904362, and the parts locator shows two possible dealers with stock but I called and they are both out of the 3904362. Thx!...Craig- Top

Re: Federal Mogul/Speed Pro BB Solid Cam
Duke - actually, it is cheaper to get the Crane unit through GMPD going through gmpartsdirect.com by about $15. But, I really have come to trust Federal Mogul, TRW,and Speed Pro over the years (all the same now) for quality in parts. I thought maybe Crane was pretty good, but, seem like I saw some negative here on lobe uniformity and base circle issues. Thx for your thoughts though!...Craig- Top
