    Engine/Trans Removal

I have read the instructions regarding the removal of the 4 spd in my 71. Sounds like a project. Since I plan to remove the engine could I do one of the following?

    1) slide the Engine and trans out as a unit?

    2) Slide the Engine and bellhousing off the trans as I pull the engine?

    1) Definitely

    2) Some folks say this can be done but, personally, I would not attempt it.

      Henry:

I think the easiest way is to bring the engine out alone. Leave the bellhousing on the transmission and pull it out separate from the engine. Put it back the same way.

I always pull the engine and transmission as a unit. The key is having a hoist with adequate "hook height" so that you can get it high enough to easily clear the car with the engine hanging on it. Don't forget to cap the transmission tailshaft to prevent gear lube from leaking out..............

Definetly pull both the engine and trans at the same time.

I've removed them each way on both auto and manual trans cars, including the trans from below on my garage floor (that one was a 4 speed car). By far the easiest IF you wanted to remove the engine anyway is to do them as a unit PROVIDED your engine lift has a long enough boom and legs. You should use an engine tilt if at all possible. You will need an assistant or two as well.

If you don't need to remove the engine, then don't go through the hassle of removing the radiator and everything else just to remove the transmission. Take it from below.

This is definetly a DIY job. I say that because I did it, never having done this before. There is a great book out called "How to Rebuild Your Small Block Chevy". Lots of great tips and advice. Definetly remove the engine and tranny as a combination. I also got a load leveler, which is a jack screw device that allows you to shift the weight forward or backward as necessary to tilt the engine.

Remove your water pump-support the trans-unbolt the trans from the bell houseing ( four bolts)- remove the (two) rear trans support bolts-disconect the shifter from trans- Dis-connect the drive shaft at the rear and let it drop down-push the trans back toward the rear. Now pull the engine , then later do the same in reverse.

Did my 73 4 speed 3weeks ago. This crew was a termendous help -but ya gotta ask the right questions.

Once everything is unhooked, it was a breeze. Engine hoist has to come in from the side with the front wheel off so you can pull the hoist forwards unless you have a very long boom length. Load lever makes it a precise lift- you can control the angle of the engine as you pull it out.

When I removed and replaced the engine in my 70 turbo 400 I disconedted the transmission. Doing this I removed nothing forward of the engine fan, did not even have to remove the hood. Come in from the passsenger side with a lift I rented from U-Haul. Pratically lifted the engine straight up and down without the transmission. Car has air and just secured the compressor for engine removal no disconnecting of the precious R-12 lines.
