    Hurst Shifter Problems

I installed a Hurst Competition Plus shifter in my 427/390 roadster and I can't get it to go in to 2nd, 4th or reverse. When I try to put it in 2nd or 4th it "growls" like it almost wants to go. When I try to put it where reverse would be - it is in first. I followed the instructions (I thought) including pinning the shifter in neutral during installation. What should I try next?

It almost sounds like your "stop bolt" is not letting your synchronizers get all the way ingaged in 2nd and 4th. If you back the bolt off a little, it may fix it. As far as reverse, if you pinned the linkage when you adjusted, I would guess you are not pulling hard enough to the left to get it in reverse.

I tried taking the "stop" bolts all the way out. Same results.

I know you wrote that you followed the instructions but just to go over it again... So you put the shifter gate in neutral and locked it with the alignment pin, then you installed the shift rods with the shift fork levers in neutral, and you installed them with the pins facing in the right direction on both the shifter arms and fork lever and clipped then in. You then completely backed out the stop bolts on the shifter body, put the trans in 1st and adjusted the bolts back down until they just touched the stop and then loosened then about an eighth of a turn. Then you put the shifter in 2nd and did the same thing with the stop bolt on the other side of the body. Before you did all of this, I'm sure you had the wife (or significant other or perhaps a non-drunk buddy) actually shift through the gears, including reverse, to ensure you don't have a rod or lever catching on something). As long as you got the right adapter, body, and levers, you shouldn't be having any "trick" problems.

Whoa Gerry, tell me you are giving those directions from memory and I will be impressed! Good advice.

Boy, I'd sure follow Gerry's advice about checking the rods and having someone shift while you're watching from below. Something could be hanging up, binding or not hooked up correctly. The current issue of Chevy High Performance magazine has an article covering the installation of a Comp Plus shifter on a Muncie and it has a few tips. Not sure what the month is, but the cover has a guy holding a wrench and there's a blue 'tinted' engine in the background. It's the current issue on news stands.

As far as I can remember, the Hurst shifters for C2s and C3s have differently configured shift arms. For example, a C3 shifter will bind in a C2. Sure you got the right one?
