I recently purchased a replacement radio side panel (fiberglass)for my 67 vette. The interior color is dark green. The replacement part is black and needs to be painted. Should I prime it and use interior vinyl spray dye to get a correct match, or is there something else I should be using? If there is, where can I get it?

Re: 67 interior paint question
Gus,
I've been watching to see if someone would respond to your request that knew how the factory did it as my method may not be factory correct. I purchased a car that had many of the interior hard parts done over. I was not satisfied with the job so wanted to do them again. Some of the parts I cleaned with a commercial prep-sol. then hit them with a fine scuff pad, prep-sol again followed with a tack cloth and shot with dye I had purchased from ZIP in a quart can. Some parts I sanded out flaws which took me down to bare and none of the parts I did this with showed any sign of primer being used. I did this 6 years ago and all parts still look fine with no failures.- Top

Re: 67 interior paint question
No, It is not dyed. It is lacquer paint. If you go to a local paint jobber that still has lacquer, they can mix it by the formulas. I would not prime it if the paint that is now there is OK. If it is not, you could strip it with lacquer thinner and apply a thin lacquer primer. The reason that you should not do too much to it, is because it should be rather rough and not perfectly slick. There are DA sander scratches that show through the paint on origianls.- Top
