Where is the serial number / ID number located on a 66 Roadster frame? Can it be viewed with the body on? I just moved to CA and DMV needs to see 2 ID numbers. The original engine is in my garage, so I think I will need to show the tag and the frame. Thanks - Joe

Re: C2 - 66 Roadster Frame ID
Joe,
DMV is nuts. I'm betting that DMV is never going to able see either frame number. There is no way that number would be visible on my rusty frame. When I brought my car to CA, I had a local city police officer verify my VIN by looking at the trim tag under the glovebox and that was it. If they want to see two numbers, then I'd show them the trim tag and the engine pad number, if your engine is original and hasn't been decked. If DMV is picky about the frame number, I'd try another DMV office.

Re: C2 - 66 Roadster Frame ID
Joe-----
The frame VIN derivative stamping is located on the upper surface of the left side frame rail. Usually, it is stamped at the point on the frame rail upper surface which is just forward of the centerline of the rear wheel. It is very difficult to see with the body on the frame. Some folks have success by thoroughly cleaning the space with a small brush and using a mirror. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: C2 - 66 Roadster Frame ID
I just repaired my frame and had it blasted. It's the area that is black with the attached link. I had it covered before blasting. I noticed the number was also stamped on the left rail about 18" in front of the wheel.
If interested in the repair I made take a look at the few images I have take a look- Top

Re: C2 - 66 Roadster Frame ID
Joe:
There are 2 sets of VIN numbers stamped on your left side frame rail, and both appear on the upper surface of the rail. One set, known to all, is stamped about 2/3 of the way rearward of the front pillar. The second, sometimes known as the "hidden" number, is stamped near the apex of the rear kickup.
Do these coppers have a problem with your car's registration????

Re: C2 - 66 Roadster Frame ID
Joe --- John H's photo shows where to look on '66 frames. The other "rear" VIN derivative location, prior to '66 model year, is approx. between the upper shock mount bracket and the trailing arm bumper (stop). The latter (forward) position is on my '65 # 014xx. Don't know when the change to the further-back position occured, but it's found there on late '65's.- Top

Re: C2 - 66 Roadster Frame ID
Thanks to all. I don't know if DMV will make an issue of it or not, I will go next week. The reason I an nervous is I just had my wife's car registered (only 3 years old) and they wnated to see the vin and the engine block # to validate 2 different #'s. Since the engine currently in my car is a non # matching driver engine (I am rebuilding the original # matching 427/390) I was concerned they may not allow me to register. I could show them my block (currently in my garage) and the car seperately if needed, or I was thinking of using the frame if possible. I will take it in and see what happens. Thanks again - Joe- Top

Re: C2 - 66 Roadster Frame ID
I told the DMV clerk, "there is no other VIN location on cars this old" (1967). She said "OK" and issued a license. Ya gotta say it with conviction!
Convincing California DMV that the rivets used to attach my 1960 VIN tag are original was a bit more difficult.- Top

Re: C2 - 66 Roadster Frame ID
Yep, they are fun to deal with, hee hee. I am trying to register my 54 with an original year of manufacture (YOM) plate on it. Affidavits, releases, more fees ($85 just for the YOM plate), more forms, more delays.....you know the drill. It took multiple trips to get the yellow YOM plate on my 60.- Top

Re: C2 - 66 Roadster Frame ID
All, Thanks for all the advice and sympathy with California DMV. I was able to register with only the body VIN tag today. The DMV clerk was very interested / curious about the car. He did want to see the engine to look for the ID, but was so curious looking around in general and asking questions, he forgot to look at the actual number. Thanks again to all who responded. - Joe- Top
