Norm, The side posts can be repaired by milling out an area on the bottom and attaching a new tab with screws. Corvette Central provides this service, and I believe they charge about $55 each. Others no doubt also do this, but I've used the CC pieces and know they work.
If you determine the ws has to come apart (and I think you will), you may want to go ahead and order a new windshield gasket unless the one you have is almost new and very supple. The dash pad fits under the windshield gasket, so likely you can straighten out any problem you have there while you have the ws off.
