OK FELA's here is the scoop. On Tuesday Evening I spoke with Eleanor (Dales ex wife) His condition was deteriorating rapidly. I waited for Ken to arrive at Dale's. Knowing that I had all Dales med records sent to Vanderbuilt, I decided to take a chance and get Dale to Vanderbuilt and see if I could get them to admit him so that the liver doctors could see him.
Ken and Gary loaded Dale into the car and drove to Nashville. I arrived at Vanderbuilt about 30 minutes before Dale. I told them we had a critical patient coming in and they need to help us. When Ken and Dale arrived they immediately took him to a room in the emergency area. Several Doctors and nurses worked on Dale. It was great. Dale's condition was worst then I thought when he arrived. You cannot imagine how rough he looked. It broke my heart.
The ER doctors worked on Dale for a couple of hours. I was still concerned about them admitting him. They had told us that the hospital was full. At that point something happened. I was standing beside the computer in the room and noticed that Dales name was up on it. The box beside the word admit was not checked. Somehow within seconds of seeing the UN checked box it was checked. The nurse walked in and looked at the computer and said "oh it looks like they are going to admit him" She began the paper work.
The ER doctors found all Dale's medical records that had been faxed to them the day before. They read and studied them right then.
After being in the hospital for a few hours, Dale began to take a turn for the better. He was talking and he even smiled a few times.
The Doctors and nurses in the Emergency room were outstanding. They gave us hope and really took care of Dale.
At 4:00 am Wednesday morning I left to go to home and wash up for work. I returned at 9:00 AM. When I got to Dale's room, 3 doctors from the liver transplant team were talking with Dale and asking him questions. The amazing thing was how great Dale looked. His color was better, his speech was perfect and he was even smiling. As the doctors were finishing up with Dale, he said something that blew me away. Dale told the doctors that he wanted to live no matter what it took. He had too many great friends that loved him and were praying for him. He was talking about all you guys that have sent him cards and letters and are praying for him.
The doctors were positive and gave us a great deal of information and hope. They told us that there are 4 goals to accomplish
1-Stabilize Dale's condition
2-Get him eating
3-Run a series of tests to determine the cause
4-Evaluate the possibility of the transplant
5-Put the transplant in front of the board for approval.
We are not out of the woods yet. First they have to determine if Dale's health will with stand the transplant. The liver surgery is very tough. Next they have to have a panel of 7 doctors review Dale's records and decide if he is a good candidate for a liver transplant. Dale's age is against him. They prefer to transplant people that are under 60. If his health is good enough to with stand the surgery I have a few ideas on convincing the panel. Once he is officially on the list we wait and Dale becomes a member of the organ donor patient list. Then they determine the severity of need and that determines Dale's place on the list.
This is still a long shot. But it is a shot. I thought that if we all got together and wrote letters to the hospital about Dale and what he means to us. I could have the letters placed in his file for review with the transplant committee. That may sound stupid but I am willing to try anything at this point. Let me know what you guys think.
I spent part of yesterday evening with Dale. I was so pleased. He actually had eaten part of his dinner. He has not eaten food in almost a month. That is a real positive step. Dale is a real fighter guys. You would not believe how bad he wants to live.
All the test results should be in within the next few days. Keep praying that Dale can with stand a surgery of this magnitude. Then we will work on the next step.
Please keep praying for our friend. If anyone has any suggestions please feel free to call me at 615-429-7397. I am open to anything.
Best Regards,
Steve Bone.
