Compassion Requested, A Friend Needs Help

I RESPECTFULLY request that this post remain up during thanksgiving and ask for the memberships assistance:
The note below appeared elsewhere but our longtime friend needs our Help. Please make an exception to the tech boards criteria for this single post

OK FELA's here is the scoop. On Tuesday Evening I spoke with Eleanor (Dales ex wife) His condition was deteriorating rapidly. I waited for Ken to arrive at Dale's. Knowing that I had all Dales med records sent to Vanderbuilt, I decided to take a chance and get Dale to Vanderbuilt and see if I could get them to admit him so that the liver doctors could see him.
Ken and Gary loaded Dale into the car and drove to Nashville. I arrived at Vanderbuilt about 30 minutes before Dale. I told them we had a critical patient coming in and they need to help us. When Ken and Dale arrived they immediately took him to a room in the emergency area. Several Doctors and nurses worked on Dale. It was great. Dale's condition was worst then I thought when he arrived. You cannot imagine how rough he looked. It broke my heart.
The ER doctors worked on Dale for a couple of hours. I was still concerned about them admitting him. They had told us that the hospital was full. At that point something happened. I was standing beside the computer in the room and noticed that Dales name was up on it. The box beside the word admit was not checked. Somehow within seconds of seeing the UN checked box it was checked. The nurse walked in and looked at the computer and said "oh it looks like they are going to admit him" She began the paper work.
The ER doctors found all Dale's medical records that had been faxed to them the day before. They read and studied them right then.
After being in the hospital for a few hours, Dale began to take a turn for the better. He was talking and he even smiled a few times.
The Doctors and nurses in the Emergency room were outstanding. They gave us hope and really took care of Dale.
At 4:00 am Wednesday morning I left to go to home and wash up for work. I returned at 9:00 AM. When I got to Dale's room, 3 doctors from the liver transplant team were talking with Dale and asking him questions. The amazing thing was how great Dale looked. His color was better, his speech was perfect and he was even smiling. As the doctors were finishing up with Dale, he said something that blew me away. Dale told the doctors that he wanted to live no matter what it took. He had too many great friends that loved him and were praying for him. He was talking about all you guys that have sent him cards and letters and are praying for him.
The doctors were positive and gave us a great deal of information and hope. They told us that there are 4 goals to accomplish
    1-Stabilize Dale's condition
    2-Get him eating
3-Run a series of tests to determine the cause
4-Evaluate the possibility of the transplant
5-Put the transplant in front of the board for approval.
We are not out of the woods yet. First they have to determine if Dale's health will with stand the transplant. The liver surgery is very tough. Next they have to have a panel of 7 doctors review Dale's records and decide if he is a good candidate for a liver transplant. Dale's age is against him. They prefer to transplant people that are under 60. If his health is good enough to with stand the surgery I have a few ideas on convincing the panel. Once he is officially on the list we wait and Dale becomes a member of the organ donor patient list. Then they determine the severity of need and that determines Dale's place on the list.
This is still a long shot. But it is a shot. I thought that if we all got together and wrote letters to the hospital about Dale and what he means to us. I could have the letters placed in his file for review with the transplant committee. That may sound stupid but I am willing to try anything at this point. Let me know what you guys think.
I spent part of yesterday evening with Dale. I was so pleased. He actually had eaten part of his dinner. He has not eaten food in almost a month. That is a real positive step. Dale is a real fighter guys. You would not believe how bad he wants to live.
All the test results should be in within the next few days. Keep praying that Dale can with stand a surgery of this magnitude. Then we will work on the next step.
Please keep praying for our friend. If anyone has any suggestions please feel free to call me at 615-429-7397. I am open to anything.
    Best Regards,
    Steve Bone.
Please submit letters on Dales behalf to:

To: Vanderbilt liver transplant team, Vanderbilt University Medical Center

I am writing you on behalf of my friend Dale Pearman. As you are aware Dale is a patient at your outstanding Medical Center and is currently undergoing transplant review. Your Medical Center is Dales only chance, I know that your staff will be able to stabilize Dale and get him into the condition he needs to be in, in order to undergo the transplant procedure. One of your consideration as always is the patients will to live and tolerate the procedure. Dale has led an amazing life and has made many friends, this life and the friendships Dale has made is the driving force in his wanting to live. He will be a perfect candidate in terms of willingness to cooperate in his recuperation regiment and following your instructions for rehabilitation. The other important factor is a support structure, Dale has amazing family and friends that will, as I'm sure you aware of , aid him in is recuperation from this operation. I hope you take his willingness to work with you and his support structure when you make your decision. I know you won't regret saving Dales life.

          Yours Truly

Re: Compassion Requested, A Friend Needs Help

NCRS Membership >>> Dale Pearman needs your prayers and support at this time. If the shoe were on the other foot, Dale would be there for you as he has been for all of his Corvette friends, for many years.

On this day of Thanksgiving, take a few minutes and think of a comrade in the hospital who asks for nothing, but needs so much. Email Steve a short note on Dale's behalf and count your many Blessings.

Thanks In Advance for Your Support..!!!

            Rick

Re: Compassion Requested, A Friend Needs Help

I am a medical student planning to do transplant surgery upon graduation (and just completed some med-student research at Vandy last year). I also worked full time for the Arkansas Regional Organ Recovery Agency before going to medical school. I have been in on numerous transplant procedures and am very familiar with this process. I would be happy to answer any questions that any of you might have. Feel free to forward my email address/ phone number to Dale and his family.

Also, if any of you feel close enough to Dale to consider donating part of your own liver, this IS a possibility. This is not an easy procedure (donating part of your liver), but is lifesaving to the recipient. The liver is the only organ in your body that can regenerate - meaning that both the donor and recipient end up with a complete functioning liver after all is said and done. The donation criteria are very rigid, and maybe 1 in 1,000,000 people would be a "match" (potential donor) for Dale, with the most likely living-donor "match" being a close family member (sibling or child). But if interested, anyone can donate a blood sample to determine if they could be a potential donor.

All this said, I would like to add that prayers DO work. I have seen it time and time again. There has even been empirical research to back this up. Patients who have people praying for them do better. Seriously! I could talk to you for days on end about 'miricles' that I have seen in response to prayers for healing. So, while you are thanking God for the turkey and dressing, offer a prayer for Dale. THIS is the most helpful thing that you can do.

And send a note to Vanderbilt. How many of us has he taken time for?

I sent a brief note to Moneypenny. I'll resist the obvious pun. . .

What has happened to Dale, anyway? I take it his liver is failing but is thisan acute condition or something that has been coming on for a period of time?
