Dave, I know that the pros will kick in on this one, so I will comment as the typical back room mechanic. Other than the obvious of checking the gauge, have you checked the output of the alternator by putting a multimeter on the back of the alternator? Is it really putting out that much? In addition, these days, most of the components we replace come from? Mexico? China? I have a 60000 mile Buick, that my daughter drives, in Phoenix, Az. I have replaced the electronic module in the HE distributor three times in 20000 miles. I know they are cheap parts but, hey!!!! So, have you tried a new module? In all this, have you put a battery charger on you "new" battery? I always charge a new battery when I first bring it home. My son in law worked for an auto parts store and when they put a battery in the car, they NEVER checked the output, regardless of how much dust it had collected.

First the 79 guage reads volts not amps. Ane second it sounds like it is operating fairly normally. 12.5 Volts static and 14.5 volts charging.

Dave - as Wayne says, the 13-14.5 range is just right for the voltage. It sounds correct to me....but you could use a digital multi meter to check for sure...and compare the voltage readings as best you can given the scale on the cars guage....Craig

It should be showing 13.5V or better all of the time while running. If you have just changed the regulator, there may be a slight difference than the last one. They are setup to work at a certain voltage within tolerances. If you look at the back of the alternator where the regulator is mounted you will see a hole in the case that is shaped like a D. Look inside that hole and you will see a small tab. Use a screw driver and ground that tab to the case. The alternator will put out maximum. It will show you if the regulator is regulating. The fact that it does fall back a little after a time is a good indication that it is.
