Archive Search Engine Test *TL*

All,

I have put together a new Archive Search Engine. https://www.ncrs.org/forum/archivesearch.htm It is just a little different format than the Tech Board and the current Archive Search. It does search a little over 79,000 messages at the same time. There are currently over 100,000 messages in the Archives, but even this script times out before it can search over the 80,000 number.

Try it out and let me know what you think. Is it and improvement?

John,the new format is great. I just tried it for "1967 Tank Sticker" and received over 100 messages filled with useful information. Thanks very much for making the "SEARCH" feature much more user friendly.

Well, I just tried it and received the following error. I'm on dialup, currently connected at 42k. ~Juliet

Error 500: Internal Server Error
Your request could not be processed due to an internal server error. The server was probably busy handling other requests. Use your back button and retry your request. If you were making an order rest assured that you will not be double billed if there was a server error.

That is the error that comes up when the server times out before the search is complete. I don't think it matters if you have dial up, or cable access it is a function of the servers speed. If I tried to include more than the 79,000 messages that are included I got that message every time. If it is going to be common I may have to back off to about 70,000 messages or even less. This then leaves about 30,000 unsearched messages, or I need to create a second search for those messages. Maybe two searches of about 50,000 messages each instead of the 11 groups that are now in service.

We are generating about 36,000 messages a year at our current rate, so we will soon be back in the same boat.

Greatly needed improvement! I did get the error message, but after modifying the search description I was able to read many archived & relevant posts. Maybe we chould be more specific (methodic) in an organized way when originally posting to assist future searches?

John, as I said yesterday,using "1967 Tank Sticker" I received 150 messages. I only had time to read 50 to 60 yesterday. Today, using the same, and I mean exact parameters, it will only pull up 40 messages. What happened? Thanks for your help.

I am not sure what to tell you. I tried to duplicate your results today. When I searched on "1967 tank sticker" if I searched on "all terms" which means a message must contain 1967 + tank + sticker to meet the criteria I got about 40 matches. If I tried on "any terms" which means the message contains 1967 or tank or sticker, I got an error that the server was overloaded. I tired it a dozen times. I finally revamped the search script to only search about 44,000 messages before I could get a return. I then got "(44,062 files searched; 2,241 matches found)".

This may take some more tweaking to get it worked out so it is reliable.
