I have a 1982 Collectors Edition. While cleaning my rims with a strong citris based cleaner, I removed all the clear coat. The rims look really great now. I am entering my car at the Jan., Regional Meet in Orlando for Flight Judging. Do you think I should have the rims resprayed with clear coat or just leave them the way they are. Will I lose many points for not having the clearcoat on them? If I had them respryed, will they be able to tell the clearcoat is not original and will I lose even more points? I'm not trying to get over on anyone, just trying to lose as little points as possible. Sorry for all the questions.

I would definitely re-clearcoat the wheels. The unprotected aluminum may look good right now, but it will soon oxidize and require regular polishing. You'll want a clearcoat that doesn't yellow. When so-clearcoated, I don't think that anyone will be able to tell whether it's "original" or "replacement" clearcoat. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: C3 rims
Hi John, I had my 82CE judged last year at the same meet, as we've talked previously, and my clearcoat deduction was 4 points out of 11 possible due to clearcoat deterioration and scratches on all four wheels. You're not going to lose much here, but without the clearcoat there's another 12 points for originality you would also lose on. ChuckChuck Lyman
