I am searching for a 1954 Corvette I owned for 10 years ('59-'69). All I have is the VIN number. How can I find the car?

Re: Corvette search by VIN number
I have a similar problem, only it is a '68 with a known VIN #. I plan to write the Department of Transportation in the state it was last heard of (Florida in '82) and hope that the car is still in the state. If this doesn't pan out, I may write several other nearby southern states. I know of no other way unless you have a law enforcement friend. I think they have access to many or all state databases.
Good luck,

Re: Corvette search by VIN number
If you are aquainted with a law inforcement officer, see if he will run the number. They will be able to get registration information for a vehicle in their state of residence. Sometimes they will have to get another person involved to run an out of state check if you do not know the state where you think the car is located as there 49 more states.
If you come up negative, that does not mean the car no longer exists. If is possible that it has not been registered for many years and dropped of the state registration where the car is located. This makes it much tougher as you will then need to know the state/location to make much headway on an old registration. It can be done but takes much more work, especially if that state is not where you live.
Thanks to President Clinton and HIS private parts act(new privacy laws inacted by congress and signed into law by Clinton). You must now have all sorts of reasons to search a VIN and get the name of the owner. Tennessee has all the information back to the MSO for all cars sold new in the state. The information now comes back with all names "blacked out" so you will not contact the owner or know his name. IE, you have to have someone such as an attorney or ask for the information. Even being the current owner, they still black out the names of previous owners. Thanks Bill and Hillary!
Your best bet is a policeman buddy. And by all means hope it does not come back stolen as they (the police) will be very interested in why YOU are searching a stolen car!!!
