I see in Richard Prince's book that aluminum intakes from 1978 to 1982 were painted "dull silver." Is there a modern high-heat paint that would come close to what GM used at that time? Or is it best to leave the aluminum au naturel?

Re: Aluminum Intake Paint/1978-82
Paul,
I don't know the answer to your question, but I know that L79 aluminum intakes
for 65-67 were also painted silver. You might broaden your subject line and see if any C2 L79 owners have any suggestions. I think there was some discussion
of painting L79 intakes some months (or years?) back on teh Board, but I didn't make a copy of the posting and I can't remember the upshot of the discussion.

Re: Aluminum Intake Paint/1978-82
I'm surprised that this question hasn't gotten more response, but I've always used Plasticote dull alum on the intakes that need painting with good results. I think it's T34, but that might not be right. I've also found that lightly coating them and rubbing with a shop rag makes em look not quite so painted but still protects against natural aluminum oxidation. Since it's a later model than I'm used to fooling with, you might want a real painted look. Either way the PC product seems to work well.- Top

Re: Aluminum Intake Paint/1978-82
I have thought of PlastiKote as they do make some fine products. Today I perused the GM Accessories Catalogue and found GM #992653 Engine Enamel 350G Aluminum. I will have two cans tomorrow and try on a piece of scrap metal. I will let you know how it looks.- Top

Paul-----
I think that "992653" part number for the paint is a Canada-only part number. Many GM "vehicle maintenence products" have a different part number in Canada (usually due to metric system package size). I'll check later for an equivalent GM part number for those "south of the border".In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

mid-year, L-79 manifold paint suggestions
Paul,
In previous posts, people have suggested Krylon "dull aluminum cast finish" #1403
and also Alumi-Blast for mid-year L-79 aluminum manifolds. I'm not sure who makes the 2nd product. And I'm not sure if either of these paints falls into the High-Temp category.

Re: mid-year, L-79 manifold paint suggestions
Eastwood Products in Malvern PA also sells the Alumi-Blast. As far as I know, and from various midyear underhood classes in Bloomington, the amount of coverage even on small block manifolds is far less than listed in the TIM&JG. While it varies, the classes I took indicated many survivor cars judged had examples with almost no paint, and it was very common to only have it inboard about 2 inches from the heads, to clean up the appearance of the bolts and the heads. If I recall correctly, this painting was done with a different pair of valve covers on the line, and then the ribbed aluminum covers were installed down the engine asm line...Craig- Top
