    63 A/C help

My brain is stuck it needs help.

Last summer I had a high pressure problem with the A/C. It was so bad it blew the hose off the input side of the condenser. I determined that the expansion valve was jammed shut and the STV needed a rebuild. To be safe, I replaced the expansion valve, installed an STV bypass and replaced the dryer.

It got hot enough here today to turn the A/C on so I did. I made it about two (2) miles and the same hose blew off. It has to be a high pressure problem, but where. I know anything is possible but can the evaporator or the compressor clog and cause the pressure problem. I'm using 134 at the moment.

    Thanks

    Hot and sweaty!

Harry, On the line that the hose blew off on does it have a barbed fitting?

If you mean the hose clamp with the extension that hangs over the line and, yes, it's there.

Harry, the barbed end is a edge on the metal line that holds the hose from slipping. If you can take a pic. and send to my I-phone. I will let you know.

After consulting with Ed, I have an incorrect high pressure side aluminum tube leading to the condenser. There are essentially no barbs in the one I have and it will not hold the high pressure on a hot day. I'll look for a new fitting and a new freon line. This should fix the problem.

Harry, It's nice when you get a definite solution, and a relatively simple one it sounds.

Glad you found the problem. Good thing you've been using R134A !!! I just had to re-R12 the wife's '72 Jag. Yike's that's expensive stuff.

Is that a special GM only fitting, or can you get something locally?

                  Harry,
Sorry about your run of bad luck. First a Tonawanda block and now an Old Air Products Hang on AC unit!
Maybe you should consider Barrett-Jackson in January instead of golf in Florida.

                    Re: 63 A/C help

I ordered the aluminum tube so all set there. I need to also replace the associated high pressure rubber hose as it was nicked when it blew off and I'm sure the inside is scored.

Anyone have a source for a single hose with the correct lettering? I really don't want to send LIC $125.00 plus shipping for a set!

                    Thanks

Does anyone have the specifications for fan belt 3840397? It's the A/C belt.

                      Thanks

                          15/32 x 57 according to the P&A 31 Truck catalog....HERE

THIS says it changed to 3888404 in Oct 1968.

Well 57" just doesn't fit. I'll start looking into pulley sizes.

Argh, and you thought belts were confusing? I hate pulleys. Especially when there's no good list of specs anywhere.
