    Engine Compartment blackout questions

    Where the entire firewall and inner fenders painted with semi-flat black or are there sections that should be bare fiberglass? Was the wiring harness in place during the blackout?

    Hi Patrick

    I am not aware of any bare glass. I don't believe the harness was in place but the hood catches and connecting cable were. Should be some overspray on the latches (I believe about a third to half the latch) and also on the cable. Check with others on which paint to use to replicate the original

      No wiring harness in the engine bay during black out. Now is your car a St. Louis or A.O. Smith built? St. Louis cars would've had the hood latches in place, hood hinges as well. A.O. Smith cars, hood hinges in place....however no hood latches. The only bare glass one might find is behind the inner fender dust flaps and radiator support as they were in place before black out as you can see in image.

          The lower portion of the firewall is bare but the amount of bare glass varies quite a bit. On my 67 (A.O.Smith), I put the line between blackout and bare glass in the original location (at least where the painter shot my car on that particular day).

              Areas under the gill areas are likely to be bare, and under the surround. The area up under the front park lamp panel is bare. Imagine a worker with a give a S3!% attutude standing over the engine compartment and making a couple of swipes.

                Wayne;
                Do you think the area around the inside of the gills(fender vents) was avoided to not have overspray blow out onto the finish color? Was the purpose of the black out cosmetic ?
                Thanks, always appreciate your insight.
