    Intake manifold torque sequence

Looking to replace my intake bolts with correct bolts.

Does anyone remember the torque ratings and tightening sequence for a stock aluminum dual quad intake manifold for me?

Thank you in advance for your help.

    A good torque value would be 25 - 30 ft-lbs.

As to sequence, imagine a spiral which passes through all the bolts, starting with one near the center. Torque that one bolt first, the follow the imaginary "spiral" until you reach the last bolt at one of the manifold corners.

Don't forget to use sealer on the threads or you'll have oil coming up them.

Michael--What kind of sealer do you recommend on the threads? (Happening on one of my intake manifold bolts...). Thanks, Rob

Yup, good advice, and I use the Perm #2 on the threads too.

One gotcha though......be very careful when you get to the right front corner bolt. Don't go too-too(no not a 'twain) tight there. It's a weak spot of the 9653 manifold and the outer corner can break off if overtorqued.

Problem with the torque process of these intake manifolds is you have to use extension bars and u-joints/flex sockets on some bolts due to access problems if the 2 WCFB's are in place. This can yield a inaccurate torque wrench reading on those. Use caution.

I gave up trying to use a torque wrench on manifold bolts long ago and found a good box wrench and an educated hand works better for me. I don't recommend it though for any one else. I educated my hand by breaking a manifold corner off on a set of dual quads I "blue printed" for a friend. After that, I stuck to doing the carbs only.

Yes I think many of us have learned the hard way. Back in the 80's I broke one of my beautiful aluminum valve covers after my first ever 270hp solid lifter t w e a k i n g (ha ha I fooled the spider-bot bad word locator). I was a little too aggressive tightening the Phillips screws. I was using my 3/8" drive ratchet with a adapter to a #3 Phillips bit.

Ever since then I use a #3 screwdriver and a "weak" wrist. Lucky for me though I found a nice replacement at the Amherst NH(Hollis) swap meet for 10 bucks asking price! Needless to say I didn't even haggle with the seller.

                      Kevin,

I'm a firm believer in the FIP Black gasket sealer from Toyota. It's about $15 a tube but it's the best for oil leaks sealing. I have used for about 20 years on oil pan, valve cover and intake manifold gaskets.
