Dear All,I am brand new to the Corvette Scene, as I always had T5 Mustangs before. I know, shame on me:-). In any regard I am now looking for a 65-67 Convertible, preferably with a big block (327/350 or 365 would be fine as well) and if it turns out to be a 427/400 with A/C. In any regard, I found a car that would fit, which sits on Ebay. The Seller send me the following Information last night:"I have some unfortunate news. The wheels on the Corvette are indeed reproductions. The engine casting number and pad stamps are correct but I can not locate the date code casting. The head casting number is another story. I pulled a valve cover this afternoon and found out the heads on the car are incorrect"What shall I do, Hands off? bid less? How big is the deal here?I really would like to buy this car, but assume it'll still fetch upwards 0f 100K, as it is otherwise in great restored shape, albeit it was never NCRS judged.I appreciate all Input and as the auction runs till Sunday night, before thatI have some unfortunate news. BRMartin P.S. if anybody in this Forum has a car that fits the above description, I am listening

My advice is never to purchase a car you have not personally seen and inspected.

Re: Buying a 67 427/400 A/C car with apparently not all parts correct
I am trying to find somebody in Austin to have a closer look. The question is, should I just let it go, because with the Information given, this car is too much removed from collectible to even bother? In short assuming this is it on the side of non original is that a dealbreaker or is it just a Price adjuster and if so, by how much. The original bill of sale is there, showing that this an original 427/400 A/C- Top

Hi Martin.
Welcome to NCRS.
Perhaps you could post a link to the car. Also, although helpful, do not rely on paperwork unless someone knowledgeable has checked it out. There is as much phony docs as there are cars.
What do you plan to do with it? Just drive and enjoy, have it judged, NCRS? That will have a lot to do with the opinions you receive. I have owned rough drivers and Bloomington Gold/Duntov cars.
Good luck in pursuing the car of your dreams!!

Re: Buying a 67 427/400 A/C car with apparently not all parts correct
Hi Bob,enjoying it, driving it, not losing money on it assuming I do not missus it. I do not need a 97+score, but I want a legitimate original car. The car sits at Ebay, under this auction number: 171370089670. Red 1967 427 convertible. I thought the answer was very honest and I have little/no reason to think that the paperwork is fake. But again, all Input is appreciated. If somebody lives in Austin Texas and can take look at it, the better. I am having a hard time to find somebody. I live kind of too far away :-))- Top

Re: Buying a 67 427/400 A/C car with apparently not all parts correct
Martin,
My suggestion (based on personal experience) is you take a step back from purchasing a car right now. A real 67 Big Block is a very desireable car and given the $$$ involved brings out the folks willing to fake a car.
I suggest, BEFORE you buy, avail yourself of the information available from NCRS. Take some time to attend Regional/National events-take classes, be an Observer Judge for the year cars your interested in, attend the Advanced Judging Schools offered. NCRS offers Judging Guides specific to year, Trim Tag Books, and Document Services. (You might want to follow the thread on that).
Point is, armed with information you can make a MUCH more informed decision.Judging Chairman Mid-Way USA (Kansas) Chapter- Top

David, advise certainly taken, but as I sit in good old Germany, I will always have to rely on external advise. The next NCRS chapter sits in the Netherlands. I am aware off the fact that I am looking for a guesstimate and not an empirical answer. Thus let me rephrase the question a little bit. Assuming all was numbers matching and correct on this car ( not a 100 Point car, but perhaps 94), it would probably run around 120K; correct? How much would one deduct? Or is the decission forget it, as it is not original?- Top

Re: Buying a 67 427/400 A/C car with apparently not all parts correct
Martin:
looks like a very nice car. With all the photos taken, there is not one of the engine pad which certainly is critical when talking about this level of car and price. I have requested a photo.
I'm sure someone will either know this car or will be able to go take a look at it. I had a 19K 400/ac car. There are a few things to look for. I'm sure others can comment on the paperwork, trim tag and vin.- Top

Re: Buying a 67 427/400 A/C car with apparently not all parts correct
Martin, welcome to NCRS! I took a quick glance at the auction. Are they claiming that the trim tag is authentic? If so, you would be wise to have a knowledable person verify that for you. Red on red is a very rare and desirable color combination and lots of people have tried to replicate it. Good luck in your search!- Top

Does the tank sticker in the ad look fakey to anyone else? It seems to me that the paper is faded but the printing looks a lot brighter than typical for even an excellent tank sticker. The font also seems very slightly narrower and taller than the original, but maybe that's just my imagination.- Top
