Did 66 use a curved 9 in the Flint engine code stamping? The reason I ask is I'm looking at a 66 to purchase and the owner says he's sure it's the original block but has been told that judges are kicking out curved 9's in favor of straight leg 9's. I've seen the stamp and it looks good with good broach marks. Your opinion please. Thanks, Mike

Re: Engine code stamp. Curve or straight 9?
Mike:
This idea that only certain style characters were used to stamp engines is pure nonsense. I've seen straight leg, as well as curved"9's" in suffix stampings. Another example that gets a lot of attention is the number four. Many judges maintain that a closed four, such as this "4" was the only correct style for Corvette. More nonsense. I have personally owned two original 1957 engines that had open fours. I have also seen a Flint block that had both style fours in the stamping.
Judges that make calls regarding fonts need to use a little common sense. GM had no good reason to specify the font to be used.- Top

Courtesy of John Hinkley.......I did a reverse image for easier eyeball comparisons.
Looks like 3 or 4 "9"/"6" fonts.

Thanks for the replies. I agree that several fonts had to be used. Here is the number 9 in question from a Flint 66Attached Files- Top

IIRC he said when he worked at the St Louis Plant during midyear production, but when he checks in he'll tell us for sure.- Top

It looks reasonable, but why not show it in the context of the whole pad or at least the whole Flint stamp?- Top

As I recall, that particular setup pad was "liberated" from Flint V-8 the year it closed.- Top

Look at the number "3"...there are at least three different styles. The number "8" has a real weird one fifth from the left in pic #2. Lots of variances to be seen.Leif

.....But not all of us can afford those fancy-shmancy race engines Jimmy, so we have to play around with all of this "peppery crapola".
However, I always wanted to race my stock, numbers matching cars at Sebring. Just like they did when they bought 'em off the showroom floor, drove to the track, raced all day, then drove 'em home.

Jim I couldn't agree more that's why I walked from Corvettes for a few years and started drag racing. Now our local drag strip was forced to close so back to my first love.- Top

That is such a great picture yet so daunting at the same time, and it is only a Flint stamp set! Thanks for the share.- Top
