Leaving NCRS National Convention for a 1500 mile ride back to Miami

I really enjoyed the week. Judging worked out great for me, but as usual, not without a few hiccups. $300 dated restoration battery top came unglued, so it had the appearance of a cheap battery topper...50% deduct with a 10 point hit. HUGE discrepancy in chassis judging between regional and BG/Nationals...Lost 69 points on chassis, mostly due to dealer applied undercoating when I only lost 21 points at the last regional. This is something that needs to be addressed at future regional events as it is way too large of an inconsistency with judging.

Leaving with what I came here for...I got the duntov. Scored a 97% with no points to spare.

A big public thank you to Chuck Berge for helping me over the past 2 years and a big thank you to the 69 judging team for all of their hard work. Really enjoyed talking to everyone at convention. I cannot wait to wax my car...it's been 3 years.

That's great and nice to see someone other than a "grey beard" keeping the hobby alive.

Well done!! Certainly not an easy task. Now, like you said...go wax it and enjoy it (translate: drive it)

Gary, it was a pleasure getting to meet you at the sandwich shop. Hope we didn't rush you through your dinner, too much, that night. So glad to see some younger people involved and being able to afford the process. Congratulations on the Duntov award. You earned it. You have a beautiful car.

Re: Leaving NCRS National Convention for a 1500 mile ride back to Miami

Relatively uneventful drive home. Pushing 70 the whole way ended up getting a little under 7mpg with my expedition.

As far as they grey beards...I only heard that my father had a beautiful car twice at convention. I figured I would have heard it a few more times, as it never fails, I hear it at least once at every local car show.

I would have driven the car to KS, but happy that I didnt as I needed all of the points for the 97. I also had a huge storm with nothing but heavy wind and rain from Birmingham south to Tallahassee, so it was better that the car was in a trailer.

Tom, it was nice talking with you and your wife at dinner. I had a chance to say hello a few times during the rest of the week, so its always nice to make a few new connections.

I am really happy to have the duntov sticker for my window. I already put it on the car. I doubt I will ever put the Bloomington Silver sticker in the window...I guess thats why they dont give an award for runner up in most sports.

                          Gary,

Are you going to scrub off that undercoating and try for BG next year?

I wish I had time to do BG next year, but I have a baby coming in November so doubtful it will work out. I got lucky that my wife was only 5 months pregnant now...if she was any further along I dont think she would have let me do BG and Nationals. I was away for 18 days out of the past 30.

As far as removing the undercoating, I refuse. My car is from DC and would be a rust bucket if it was not undercoated. I would also likely need to repaint many things on the chassis if I removed the UC and I dont see the purpose as my car is basically a survivor other than the paint and carpets.
