    Air cleaner base gloss black?

What would be the correct brand/color of gloss black to use for touch-up on a 70 air cleaner base?

    TIA,
    Mike

When I re-did my own air cleaner base, I used PPG gloss black and it turned out to be a pefect match as originally it was a gloss black. I went as far as to reproduce the lack of paint coverage on the top and bottom surfaces. Also, where the factory had a wire attached to the base of the air cleaner to hang it while it was sprayed, it left a spot where there is no paint. Hope this helps.

Is this something I can get in a rattle can?

I don't believe you can get PPG in a rattle can, but the rattle can does not have the same spray pattern as the commercial spray gun which it was how it was done originally.

          Mike,

In my experience I've never seen an example of gloss black paint from a rattle can produce a finished look that was acceptable. There's too much propellant or something in rattle cans and not enough pigment to create a gloss look that matches what was done with dipping, or flow coating, or spraying with a proper gun. I think flat and semi-gloss can be acceptably done with a rattle can, but gloss is different beast. I've given up trying to do gloss black from a rattle can. Maybe others are better then me.

            Hi Ron,

Sorry to dig up a old thread but your account is unable to accept private messages. What was the PPG number of the paint you used? Sorry for what may seem like a "dumb" question but I'm new to spray gun painting and didn't know whether the paint comes in various types any longer, e.g. urethane, lacquer, etc

            Thanks,

            Jack

Jack, I certainly don't mean to hijack (no pun intended) this thread or your question, but I thought I'd ring in here with my experience on painting air cleaner bases.

I re-did mine about 8-10 years ago and used Krylon Gloss Black. I found that good prep and an even spray gave me a good start. I didn't like the finish so I took my Griot's polishing compounds (#1, then #2, then #3 and finally #4 progressively) and smoothed out most of the orange peel. I left some in the areas where I thought the factory finish would show that factory "good enough" finish. I know these parts were not buffed to a smooth, high gloss finish when original, however, I was able to use the aforementioned technique to best replicate what I've seen in historic photos and original cars.

I've attached a couple photos to show BEFORE and AFTER my finishing. The overhead view shows a sprayed finish, complete with heavy orange peel. The LH view is after my hand finishing work. Zoom in on the snorkels to see best view of final finish. I've had the car flight judged 4 times with this air cleaner and have received zero deducts.

              I hope this helps.

That turned out beautifully Don! Yeah, I usually use a rattle can and results are hugely affected by temperature and humidity. A lot of my larger projects are done over winter when I can't paint outdoors so I made a "portable" paint booth both to allow me to paint in the winter in my garage and to be able to start using a spray gun. Thanks for the help!
