Job Number help - 1966 AOS

    Hi Everyone,

I recently found what I believe to be a job number written in yellow on my AOS built '66 (VIN 17534 - March 16) and I'm having a hard time trying to figure out what the number reads - so I'm looking for opinions/thoughts from those who have more experience or exposure to the numbers than I.

The number is on the passenger side on the underside of the rear deck of my convertible. At first glance I believed it to be a 48, but it's got this weird squiggle at the top of the second number. No doubt the first number is a 4.

A couple of the pictures were taken with a mirror.

    I'd appreciate your thoughts....

    Kurt,
    How about 317? first # a 3, then a 1 on top of the 3 followed by a 7 with a cross line?

Look on the bulkhead in front of the gas tank, and the passenger floor kick panel for the body number. Usually the numbers on the fiberglass panels were for individual panel record numbers. AOS will have a number and then a letter.

If they used number and letter, then I would call this 4E

I didn't know about the number and letter thing, but had noticed a few examples of this from the C2 Registry. I'm thinking what Don says is correct. Heck I even write my capital "E" in a similar fashion.

Added to my "to do list" is to look for the job number in the other spots that Wayne has suggested.

            Kurt,

AO Smith did use a letter before the job number starting with A and moving through the alphabet in batches of 500. I know my 66, AO Smith, #21064 has a job number of of V31. I have found it in several places. However, not every where I found the job number had that letter before it. the job number I found under the dash was only 31.

So, your March car would most likely not started with an "E" as that would have been earlier in the build year. I actually think your number is a 38. The 3 has a loop on the bottom and the 8 is made in one motion. For what it's worth.

I would look under the passenger foot well in the engine compartment. You might need to pull the splash shield and use some dish soap and water to clean it up, but that is where you should find another job number for your car.

Here is a picture of my job number on the footwell. FYI, it's written sideways V31.

              Rob,

Thanks for the additional info..... Where under the dash did you find your number? Can it be seen w/o taking everything apart?

                Kurt,

It is on the driver's side, written on top of the brace/bar and is about 5 or 6" left of the clock. I saw it when I had the dash out of the car. I tried posting a picture of it, but couldn't load it (must be too big a file).

You will also find another number on the face of the metal bar behind the dash cluster, however that number is not the same.

                    Kurt,

After looking at it more, I agree with you and think its "48" FWIW

Great photo example of the green on your AOS car. We definitely look for the green when judging AOS cars.

                            Tony -

Note that in these examples, you'd see green zinc chromate primer regardless of St. Louis-vs-AOS body source, as the photos are of birdcage components, and the birdcage was painted green at both plants.

You might also note AOS tendency not to blackout the Bar behind the tags.
