    58 rear crossmember

Replacing my rear crossmember on my 58. Does the new rivets go in from the bottom side and rivited on the top side. My old one was bolted on which I know is not correct.

    Brandon,

Keep in mind the frames were assembled upside down so the workers would drop them in and buck them. When you looked under an assembled car, you would see the head. (double checked my 58 just to be sure).

Thanks Thomas, that is how i thought they are installed but I have seen them installed with the head up on some cars.

What is the proper technique to do these rivets.....do they need heated while they are bucked.....what tools and techniques do you use?

          Dino -

The original rivets were set (cold) using a 2000 psi hydraulic rivet-setter, similar to those used next door on many locations on the Truck frame line. With that kind of tooling, heating wasn't necessary.

            Dino,

I cut off the old rivets. Welded the replacement bracket onto the frame. Then welded the rivet head and ends in place.
