    1969 427/390 A.I.R. System Pictures

I am having a tough time figuring out how to correctly re-install the A.I.R. System on my 69. The previous owner kept all of the original components, but now I am trying to figure out how it all goes back on. I have looked at the AIM until I am blue in the face. Any detailed pictures would be very helpful.

What part are you having problems with? The brackets? The pulleys? what exactly?

And do you have power steering and/or Air Conditioning?

Diverter orientation with respect to the fuel line. It appears the fuel filter is not located in the correct spot either. Hard to tell because I really don't know what I am doing. car has power steering and no air conditioning

See if these help. Note that my diverter valve isn't the "correct" finish but I refused to pay stupid money to get them replated. It's not a show car, so I didn't care. Also note that the lines, pulleys and brackets are repops, as well as the fuel lines and filter. The nuts and bolts aren't "correct" either, but this should hopefully get you in the ballpark.

          Ed,

Very helpful. I see my problem. My fuel line to the filter is in the way of the diverter breather. The previous owner must have changed this because my fuel line between the carb and filter is three small lines with connections rather than a single line,

Yep, it should be just one single continuous line going from the carb to the filter.

            Glad the pictures helped.

You might also want to note that the fuel filter bracket/clamp (part# 3932342) is missing. See AIM pg J207, UPC 6, Sheet C2. Also there is a description and picture in the 4th Edition TIM&JG, pg 71.

The fuel filter bracket attaches to the smog pump mounting bolt.

It wasn't used on the 69 big blocks. Take a look at the notes in the AIM (UPC L36, sheet A3, symbol 1):

6-26-68 prod clamp rmvd & dwg
The TIM&JG is incorrect in this case. Yes, it was used on the small blocks but not the big blocks (although it may have still been used very early in production).

                      Ed,
Are you sure about that? I was told that all external fuel filters had a support bracket.

Yes, very sure. Look at the AIM. The drawing was revised and the clamp removed on June 26th, 1968.

Of course, we all know the dates in the AIM don't reflect the date the actual change was made (only the date engineering submitted the drawing to the art department), but I would guess in this case, since it was made before 1969 production even started, that it's pretty accurate.

According to the AIM Ed is correct. Very cool - learn something everyday. Like Gary, I too had been told more than once that all engines with Rochesters used the clamp. Learn something every day.

                          Thanx for the info.

Might not have actually gone into production without the clamp. I am like 95% certain that the bowtie 69 427 at national convention had clamps as well. I will look at some of my pics tomorrow.

The AIR pump seen in the photos is not correct for a 1969 but it should be completely functional.
