1975 coupe original engine in car?

Hi. I recently bought a 1975 coupe to restore. I think the engine may have been changed along the way. I don't know if they replaced it with the correct engine for the car. I'd like to find out before I get myself too far into this. The vin# is 1Z37J5S416332. Can anyone tell me what type of engine is supposed to be in it? Thanks Eddie Robin

The J in the VIN says that the car was built with an L48 (base) engine. A 'T' would indicate an L82 engine.

Mike listed the engine type that came with your Corvette...the L48. Now, you'll want to confirm that indeed its the engine in the car, which can be determined by looking for the VIN derivative on the engine stamp pad. You can also determine if your transmission is original to the car as well but this takes getting up under the vehicle and than knowing where to look. But to get your started, I am including a link to a write up I did on my 78 that shows the engine stamp pad, tranny and other mechanical items to confirm a matching numbers vehicle. It may give you some background information and what to look for as you document your Corvette...hope this helps!
