    67 steering column paint

Does Krylon 1613 semi-flat provide a reasonable match for the visible parts of a 67 tele-steering column or is there a better paint?

I love the SEM trim black. Just used it again this past winter in restoring my guage cluster after stripping all the old black off. Came out great and any excess can be wiped off with a clean rag and lacquer thinner.

        Pat,
You should have three distinct different shades of black on the steering column. The as molded black plastic, the sheet metal tube, and the cast hub. None of these should match as one shade.

It's really the steering wheel hub and the cast turn signal hub that I am concerned with. The plastic and sheet metal tube with be ok with just cleaning.

            Patrick,

I use 1613 Krylon on most everything but as you may remember Krylon changed the formulation and to get 1613 the same color as before you have to order the industrial grade of Krylon.
Problem with the column on a 67 or any other C-2 is that the cast pot metal hub will oxidize more rapidly than the sheet metal column tube. They probably started life as the same color but 50 years later they seem to be a different shade of semi-black. And as for the black plastic it probably is a little more gray than before.
The SEMS semi black is a great paint and probably is the same color as the original Krylon 1613.

Joe, I have some industrial Krylon 1613 and it sounds like it would substitute for SEMS. The black plastic actually looks very good, but the horn button and Tele locking ring could use replating. Are good horn buttons being reproduced? What abour tele locking rings?

                Pat,

I believe that Trim Parts is reproducing tele locking rings and their 67 horn buttons are excellent. Better than originals of course!

That's fine with me. "Better than original" are not the usual words heard here to describe repro parts. Do you know if the horn button and tele lock ring sold by Paragon are made by Trim Parts.

                    Pat,

Yes, if Trim Parts makes the part is usually made by the original manufacturer with a finish that GM really wanted but didn't get. You can obtain those from Paragon.
