I buy the clip and screw set, for a C2 windshield molding, from one of our favorite vendors, use the screws and throw the clips away. The screws are very short, maybe 1/4" long? I usually just turn the j-nut, facing towards the bezel, then insert the screws. It works...
I have also kept the screws when I replace a windshied and install new clips.
I'll have to look at the C2 side windshield molding, next time I get one in the shop. I'll let you know what I find.

My totally unscientific hunch is that the bezel was supposed to be countersunk, but something fell through the cracks. Whoever supplied the screw didn't get the message to provide a longer screw until late 1971 model year. If the bezel were countersunk, or formed with a countersink, that short 1/4-inch screw would be adequate.Joe,

Hi Gary,
The screws in your pictures certainly look like they've been nestled in the bezels for a good while.
Is the 14,894 car a 70 or 71?

The screw in the second picture looks a lot like an interior screw. Going from memory, but it resembles the screw that attaches the side covers to the center console.Pictures from 1970, s/n 2161. Is also the same on #5774, #8448, #14544 and also on a 1971 #11,219. What I find most common is the "washered" screws are horizontal and the flat head with built in washer, go vertical. I feel this was used well into 71, then they changed over to pan-head screws. The screws used in 70 and 71 were very short, and barely gripped the J-nut.
The 71 I have here, has the "washered" head (first picture) in all eight locations, no flat head screws.
I have pictures of all five of the listed cars, if you want.
Again, my opinion.

The other screw looks exactly like the screw that fastens the fender molding as may already have been noted in an earlier post.

And some thought we went on & on about a dipstick. This is unreal because no one can tell for sure what screw was used on what year. I am sure at the factory a screw that worked is the one they used. I don't think it was an ego thing. I was just frustrated that no two judges could agree on what the correct type of screw should be. I'm going to use what is installed on Terry's car and let the chips fall where they may.And some thought we went on & on about a dipstick. This is unreal because no one can tell for sure what screw was used on what year. I am sure at the factory a screw that worked is the one they used. Don't understand why a judge would deduct for any of the screws I see here. Maybe a ego thing.- Top

What do you mean "screw in the top"?
When I removed my original bezels a month or so ago, all eight screws were the oval head type with built in washer, screw #3 pictured in my original post. I have no idea when they were installed. My bezels were original, but the screws could have been replaced at any time before I owned the car or all eight could have been original to my car. Who knows?
After reviewing the pictures of Terry's car (#2161) and car (#14888) tonight, I now believe that four of my eight screws were correct for the bezel (the ones going vertically up into the bezel, 2 ea. per bezel). The washer sticks up because the bezel is not countersunk. The other four screws which install horizontally are pictured in post #21. They have what looks like a raised ring around the head diameter.
I imagine in 1970 St. Louis, bezel screws weren't a priority on the assembly line, any mix of screws would accomplish the job.
