What do you mean "screw in the top"?

When I removed my original bezels a month or so ago, all eight screws were the oval head type with built in washer, screw #3 pictured in my original post. I have no idea when they were installed. My bezels were original, but the screws could have been replaced at any time before I owned the car or all eight could have been original to my car. Who knows?
After reviewing the pictures of Terry's car (#2161) and car (#14888) tonight, I now believe that four of my eight screws were correct for the bezel (the ones going vertically up into the bezel, 2 ea. per bezel). The washer sticks up because the bezel is not countersunk. The other four screws which install horizontally are pictured in post #21. They have what looks like a raised ring around the head diameter.

I'm imagine in 1970 St. Louis, bezel screws weren't a priority on the assembly line, any mix of screws would accomplish the job.

I spent all weekend cleaning and plating bumper bracket nuts. It is a great life!

The screwsI was asking about are the ones you describe as going up vertically. I have the screws that go in horizontally. in fact I have 8. I was thinking of using just that type screw since IMHO they look better.

My youngest sister went with me to the Colorado Regional. During that event, at one of the moments of relaxation (the hotel Managers Reception -- you have to love Embassy Suites ) I and several others who have participated in this thread had an hour-long discussion about cotter pins. My sister later expressed to me her amazement that several otherwise perfectly sane people could spend so much quality time on such minutia. You should hear what she has to say to our relatives using this example.

My advice: Don't ever bring relatives to NCRS events.

You did not go wrong you just found out you had an eye for infinite details. So you then searched the world to find a support group that could and would help you. You then purchased an old Corvette and the NCRS appeared. With a bunch of men and women that had the same problem hence the support group you needed. As Terry stated we sit around and talk about nuts and bolts and many other items. We worry about items such as what finish was the bolt then its length, head markings, thread pitch, amount of threads, did it have an un-threaded section. Then we found it also had a nut attached same problem but then a cotter key appeared more problems to solve. That is just the beginning of the quest for the finite detail that we hope to never find. Because what fun would that be if it was all perfect and no support group is needed to help with our condition.

While digging around a friends garage yesterday, I seen a pair of 65 Chevrolet aluminum wheel lip opening trim pieces, still in there original bags. One was ben about 90-degrees, so he said to keep it.
Inside the bag, is a small bag of screws to install the molding with. These are the exact same screws the exhaust bezels use.
So, the moral to this story is, look at the swap meets for old Chevrolet wheel lip molding, ask if can buy the screws!
