Spare tire lock rattles; solution = ?

My spare tire lock rattles back and forth and make lots of noise. Is the inside worn out and should I purchase a new lock; or is there another solution?

    Don,

Does it rattle when it's off the car? Or only when on the car? When the lock is off the car, does the bolt head capture pin in the large hole at the bottom move in and out when you turn the key back and forth?

      Hi Don,
Not only should the 'pin' move back and forth as Gary describes, the pin should also be spring loaded.
I believe it's the pressure of this spring that keeps the lock from rattling on the support bolt.
Can you feel the spring when you turn the lock's key??
      Regards,
      Alan

I think the spring maybe bad or worn out. The lock bangs and clangs while driving...Don

          Don,

If you take the lock off the car and push on the pin you can easily tell if the spring is not working properly. That spring can be replaced if you have an extra lock to use for donor parts.

            Gary and Don-------

It might even be possible to find a suitable spring in a hardware store. For instance, Orchard Supply carries a lot of small springs. It would not have to be an exact duplicate of the original spring to work satisfactorily.

              Don,

If you can confirm that the spring is bad, I probably have a spring from a donor lock I can send you. If you want to call me sometime, I can talk you thru the process of removing the lock cylinder and tell you what to look for on the inside. I'll send you my home phone via e-mail/private message.

                Don,

Did you ever find the source of the rattle with your tire lock?

I just thought of one other possibility. Is the lock enclosed in its rubber boot?

Hi All...It's the spring that is the issue. I'm going to the NW Regionals tomorrow, so I'll deal with it later. Thank you all for your input...Don

                    Don,

Let me know if you need a used donor spring and some guidance on how to replace your broken one. It's not that hard to do.
