    1959 After Market Battery

What brand or part number battery will fit in the battery case on a 1959. It does not need to be a restoration battery but one that the hold down will work as it did with the original. Thanks Jimmy

I second that - just bought one to fire up the engine and it fits in the battery tray perfectly.

I believe your application requires a group 24 battery. Group 24, like all battery groups, has dimensional specifications. So, I would think that any group 24 battery would fit.

Joe, Not necessarily true as the group 24 Delco Freedom battery has two "ears" for the lifting handle that must be cut off for the stock battery hold down to be installed. I usually use a hacksaw to carfully remove the ears which may or may not void the battery warranty. I experienced this with 57 thru 67 corvettes. Barry Holmes
PS For judging the Delco Freedom battery should be judged as a "Service Replacement".

Your car takes a Group 24 battery. There are different kinds of Group 24s. Your car takes a plain old regular ordinary Group 24.

Some batteries come with carrying handles. The handle is attached to the battery with "ears." The "ears" may not fit under your car's stock battery retainer. Bring the battery retainer to the store with you to make sure what you buy will fit.

Take the garish stickers and labels off the battery before you install it, and it won't look out of place in your engine compartment.

Check the archives for hints on how to get the battery in and out of the tray.

When you get the battery in the tray, hook the hold down bolts to the tray and attach them to the battery with rubber bands. The rubber bands will hold the bolts in place while you lower the retainer on them. After you get the retainer on, cut the rubber bands.

If you want NCRS points, buy a Delco battery. Delco offers two battery series for our cars. The best one is their "Professional" series. They come with the handle and the "ears." The cheaper series is the "Advantage" which does not have a handle. I have a Group 24 Delco Advantage series in my '62, and it fits perfectly.

Thanks for all the response. I ordered a group 24 from the local Chevrolet dealer today $120.00 tax included.

Resurrecting an old thread, but I'm curious about the judging points. I have the "tar top" reproduction battery in my 1959 currently, and it's due for replacement. Would the Delco Advantage be judged the same?

                Thanks.

I don't know if it would be judged the same or not. I used the reproduction tar top throughout the judging process.
