Good question, I would also be interested in the answer.

      Dan,

Don't have my photos avail. right now but what I remember it is a piece of tar paper like material (similar/same?) to what was behind the door panels that they used to cover up some of those screw/bolt access holes

        Dan:
I have a 1957 heater delete car. Your question made me get out in the garage and see what material they used. Unfortunately, one of the previous owners simply glassed in and painted that area. Since it is behind the inner fender partition, it is not very noticeable. I had the car judged at the Regional level and no judge ever caught it. I see that the AIM does not even show anything for a heater delete car. I'm sure one of our '57 "experts" will have the answer.

Slight correction to my last post. The heater hoses on a heater equipped car obviously go to the firewall next to the heater unit, not behind the inner fender. At any rate, my firewall is smooth and shows no signs of holes. The cockpit side also shows no signs of holes. I did not pull back the insulation so I didn't check the inside of the firewall.

Exactly as Jimmy says -------- Tar paper like material as might be found in door panel.
