    Decode protecto plate

    Hi All

I am a new member and new to corvettes. I am trying to decode a protect plate with no luck.
    one side has STD 983
    T1011JEH
    97B0S
    other side has FB0130W
I think I got it right hard to read upside down

Welcome David and thanks for your first post.

I can decode some of that, but the position of the numbers/letters on the third line is important and only a picture will show that.

You can de-code it yourself by looking in t he first dozen or so pages of the AIM (Assembly Instruction Manual). I am not so familiar with the 1967 PoP, but what I can tell you is:

    STD = black vinyl interior
983 is the exterior color, Goodwood Green
T1011JEH is your engine build information. T = Tonawanda, NY 1011 = October 11 JE is your engine code = 435 HP with Holley carburetors
The third line is as I mentioned above
FB0130W is your differential code and I don't have those codes for 1967 at hand, but someone will be along to answer that for you.

Short answer = YES! NCRS allows a six month window for all the pieces of the car to be manufactured before the whole car is assembled (except window glass which is 1 year). If course all the pieces have to be made BEFORE the assembly. Your engine date of October 11 (we presume 1966) works for a Feb 17, 1967 build. The casting date of the cylinder case will provide another date -- one hopes before October 11, 1966.

          Re: Decode protecto plate

          Welcome.

FB is 4:11 gears for a 427, 4 speed car, 0130 is January 30th and the "W" stands for Warren where it was made. Good for your date. Pictures would be helpful. If you are looking to buy, please take the time to post pictures and ask for opinions on the car and associated paperwork. Too many documents are made up to match the car.

I would say it looks pretty good. My '67 L71 was built on Feb. 14, 1967, and many of my parts dates and protect-o-plate are similar to yours.

A '67 L71 is a big, and very tricky investment. I would advise you get a trusted NCRS member, and there are several, to inspect the car for you. You will be money, and much less heartache ahead in the long run. Good luck!

Be careful, I'm not saying anything you've shown is suspicious, but there are doctored up cars out there and lots of doctored up paperwork. I wasn't able to view a picture of the Warranty Plate.

                        David,
The engine pad is probably the most important thing to look at. Do you have any close-up pictures of it?

No but I am going to see the car in the morning I will try to take some pictures if there was one or two other things I should take a close look at what would you suggest.

IMO Trim Plate & Engine pad both in as high a resolution picture as you can take. The block casting date is also important to make sure it fits within the engine build date. As others have said without a trusted NCRS member to look at it in person it's a high risk purchase.

Be sure the stamp pad is free of any paint. Being able to ID broach marks is key. If painted, the owner should remove with lacquer thinner or navel jelly, no abrasive.
Take a good high resolution photo.

Be sure to also photo the VIN tag and the Trim tag.
