My car has a 1986 Texas state inspection sticker on the lower right corner of the windshield. It is the only "paperwork" I have on the car. It does document the mileage that was on the car when I bought it in 1987. It is starting to deteriorate a bit. My first impulse is to keep it and try to preserve it in place some way. It is really attached to the windshield and I don't think it can be removed without destroying it. First question : Should I try to keep it and preserve it and secondly, if so, what is the best way to stabilize something like this?

Is your question about preserving the sticker asked based on concerns about how it would be judged, or based on its relevance to vehicle history?
If I wanted to preserve it in place I would get a small quantity of adhesive backed plastic (Rolls are sold in hardware stores as drawer liner or window film. Unfortunately a roll will be enough for all of us.); cut it slightly oversize and attach it to the back of the sticker and the surrounding windshield. I would not use adhesive tape. Adhesive tape will yellow in a relatively short time. I am sure given enough time the drawer liners will as well, but I think it will take longer.
Alternately use your favorite search engine and search "document preservation supplies." Some of the listed businesses may have something you can attach to the back of the label to hold it in place.Terry- Top

Re: Non-GM windshield sticker
Terry,
Thanks for the reply. I should have said in my original post that chances of this car being judged are quite remote (at least as long as I own it, as I try to drive it everyday, weather permitting.)

Re: Non-GM windshield sticker
FWIW: My 1970 has a 1974 tax sticker from the town I lived in at that time. It shows no sign of deterioration, and it was on through all the car's judging. No deducts for it.Terry- Top
