I am very interested to know serial numbers of any ORIGINAL 396 cars with power steering . Also if you had a first or second design radiator neck . I had always thought it was a late 65 option but I am told at least one early car in the 13,000 serial number range had it . It could be the rarest 396 option ????? Re: 396 with power steering
Bill,
Here are some pictures of radiators in a Bowtie (4th picture) and Bloomington Gold Survivor (first 3 pictures) 1965 Corvette equipped with 396 engine. Both cars are in the 17,6XX VIN range (25 cars apart) and have the same curved neck radiator (second design) BUT one has the add on p/n tag. Both car's radiators are stamped 65C. I also looked through all of my '65 396 restoration research photos of these two cars and both have radiator surge tanks stamped 65D. I've also included a pictures from what I believe to be a late 1964 Popular Hot Rodding Magazine article that was done on a '65 396 equipped convertible with power steering and by the looks of the pictures fully loaded with the exception of side exhaust. This car has the curved neck radiator neck also. I can't tell if it has the add-on p/n tag. I hope this helps answer your questions.
Roy,
Not to hi-jack this thread, but does the power steering equipped 396 convertible you are referring to have the power streering belt running over the inside or outside engine pulley groove? The 396, non-power steering equipped Corvette that I restored took an originality deduct for configuration of the alternator and installation of the belts because the judge at the NCRS National Convention said that the alternator belt was to run on the outer or front most pulley groove and the alternator should have a larger (wider) alternator pulley to off-set the belt to the outer pulley groove. All the pictures of I have of '65 396 cars without power steering show the alternator belt running on the inner pulley groove. I/we disputed this call on the judging field to the current '65 Team Leader with my picrtures and by using the '65 AIM which shows that the belt for non-power steering cars running on the inner pulley groove. He agreed and said that the point deducts would be corrected prior to tabulartion but when I got the judging sheets back the deducts were not corrected.
Thanks,
James West

Re: 396 with power steering
it was common knowledge, even 20 years ago that the v-belt arrangement for a 396 vet was unique in that the alternator driven belt ran off the rear groove of the pulleys, and for this reason, the alternator mounting bracket of a 65 396 differs in configuration from the 66 427 alternator bracket. mike- Top

Re: 396 with power steering
Bill,
And we reassemble the car per the AIM and all of the documented photos for all the '65 396 cars I have photograghed. The '65 Team Leader was in agreement with us but the point deducts were not corrected.
