Do we know of anyone that can rebuild the first (fragile) design without risk of breakage?

Going through all my cases I found a May of 71 case. It has the second design. My guess would be there is a transition period where you might find both cases in production/assembly line. When do you think the change over started or ended? I know these kind of things are very difficult to figure out without asking for some kind of input from the members, but I was wondering if you had any idea when the change started.

All I could really say is that the change occurred sometime during the 1971 model year. My guess has always been that it happened fairly early in the model year. However, if that's true it would mean that the 5 spoke, "open" design case was in use for less than 1 year. There very well could have been a transition period.

I'm sure the custom rebuilders like John Pirkle, etc. can rebuild these "open" style alternators. It just requires a lot of extra care which is what custom rebuilding is all about anyway. I've personally rebuilt the 69-70 style alternators which are the most fragile of all and, exercising caution, had no problem. However, I strongly suspect that high volume commercial rebuilders don't want to dink around with these cases. I'm not saying they never rebuild them but I suspect they avoid them.
