My guess is you're going to find one of your front left discs has broken...will be interesting to see what you find is the cause...keep us informed. Seriously, good to hear it's not your engine.

Steve, something to keep in mind while trying to locate the noise is to remember its some rotating while moving. things like loose wheel lugs, knock-off spinners, u-joints on half shafts or driveshaft, etc. ,don't count out the rear emg. brake hanging up.

            Re: engine noise - '66 427

At this point, i am totally sumped

once i figured out the clunking was not the engine, i drove a few more days - either i was wrong, or coincidentally something else went, because suddenly i started to hear a clanging (in synch with something...can't tell (yet) if it goes faster with car speed or engine speed), as i once again put my tail between my legs and limped straight home

i have since raised the left front of the car and rotated the wheel several times by hand...nothing - tugged and pulled on every suspension part, cable, shaft etc up under the left wheel/front end...nothing

i then gingerly started the car...nothing - let her idle until warm...feathered the gas...nothing - started to rev her more vigorously...nothing

so at this point, it is entirely unclear to me what could be making this sound - i suppose this must mean it is something that happens under engine (transmission?) load? - very nervous to try to keep diagnosing ... this is the 390h that it was born with...can't risk it - so i suppose the only thing left is to bring it to a shop??

As suggested up above, rear suspension. I'd start with the u-joints.

Might be something as simple as the brake pad separated from the backing plate. Brakes may operate as normal but...............

Maybe the best action here would be to find another local enthusiast who has been around these cars and ask if they would be willing to go for a ride and take a listen. Look to local clubs perhaps? Maybe someone here? Really tough to diagnose without hearing in person.

Have you looked at the fan clutch? You said a ''clanging'' noise, which might be the fan hitting something. Maybe the harmonic balancer, but the removing belts has already been suggested. BROKEN motor mount? Looking at the mounts in the car they may look OK, but when the engine is torqued, it will lay over and now everything is out of control.
