distributor, not just weights & springs, part differences!

i was removing the transister ignition that was installed in my C2 cast iron distributors and noticed different #s under the point cam assy with a CCW. I compared them and the hole that the vacuum can uses to move the points was not the same on both. looked at a few more and they all had different #s. That would change the amount of timing as one moved more than the other. then I looked at the top of the main shaft and noticed different #s on them. they were slightly different in shape. this would change the amount of mechanical advance.
each distributor was very different in the map even though they looked the same. changing vacuum cans, weights and springs isn't all that is needed if you don't have the original distributor designed fot that engine HP.
in my case I have a 67 BB 435HP. the one distributor was numbered a 327/300HP W/powerglide, the other was missing the tag.
I then called the guy that I was going to set the curves to fit my 435 BB and asked him how he dealt with the different shape at the weights and hole sizes/shapes that the vacuum can uses to move the points cam. he said he has to change those to get things set up for each differen't HP engine.
Guess what I am saying is that any distributor on the shelf won't fit the bill with only a spring & weight change. sorry about no pics but I am unable at this computer.

I was in error about the vacuum can hole. It was not that hole, it was the race track shaped hole that the shaft uses to drive the points cam and weights.

That is why I've owned a "Distributor Machine" (actually on my third as of now) so you can actually see the curve develop with RPM and make adjustments accordingly...

Virtually all OE spark advance maps were setup very conservative for reasons outlined in my San Diego National Convention presentation. The one exception is 365/375 HP 327s. They are close enough to ideal not to mess with.

Any distributor can be optimized or nearly optimized for any engine configuration without having to change the cam assembly or main shaft. Weights, springs, VAC and maybe grinding the slot in the cam assembly to increase total centrifugal or brazing some material on (or using a limit bushing) to limit centrifugal advance.

That presentation also offered recommended starting points for all vintage Corvette engine families.
