70 wiring for P/W & temp switch relay

Hooking up vac and engine compartment wiring on fresh restoration of 70 LS-5 w/PW. AIM and local cars I have been able to look at are either 72 models or 70 that did not have PW. My issue is the location and mounting of the PW relay and the temp switch relay. The 70 had just the temp relay, obviously, but the 2 screws mounting it are the same spacing as the PW relay and there are no other similar mounting in the area. Are the two relays mounted opposed on the same mounting screws? If so, which is to the right and which on the left of the mounting screws? Using the common mounting screws is the only logical way I have come up with. If I mount the temp relay with wires coming in from the left like the non-PW car had it, with PW relay to the right, PW relay almost touches the H/L vac switch mounted on the brake box. So, I reversed them and things will hook up, but I would like pics or confirmation: 1-they used the same mounting screws and 2-the orintation.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Mike

    Mike,

I'm guessing what your calling the "temp relay" is the TCS delay relay. And the "PW relay" is actually a circuit breaker. Anyway, can't speak for '70's but '73's when both are used, mount the TCS on the firewall and the PW breaker on the side of the section of firewall that sticks out that master cylinder or PB booster mounts to. Sorry for the run on sentence! Does that help.

Rich, thanks for your input. You are correct the more correct terminology for the PW part is Breaker Assembly; however, per the AIM and shop manual it shows the other to be "Temp Switch". Both look like relays, which operate similar to breakers. At any rate; relay, switch or breaker, hopefully those with similar cars can ID what I am talking about. I had access to 2 72's and they are quite different-only the PW breaker was in the general area of what a 70 has between the wiper and the brake box protrusion of the firewall. On the 70 I had access to that did not have PW (a Bow Tie/Survivor car), the Temp SW was actually mounted underneath/between the fiberglass firewall and the small reinforcement plate with 2 screws that secures the wiper door assembly in the wiper area. I tried that mounting first, but the wires are not long enough on my car (w PW & AC) to make it to that position-leaving the common mounting of the "switch" and the PW breaker that seemed logical. The non-PW car does not have these holes w/rubber cushioned mounting for the PW breaker. I had to assume the addition of the PW created a change to the mounting of the temp switch. I appreciate your attempt to help, but I do not think your 73 is configured like a 70.
      Thanks, Mike

Mike I have a original owner 1970 with power windows and the two wire circuit breaker for the power windows is located on the firewall to the left of a vacuum unit which is to the left of the power brake booster looking at the firewall standing beside the drivers side if the car. Next to the power window breaker unit and on it's left side is another relay with three wires, one blue, one green, and a black wire with a stripe, the stripe is somewhat faded could be red, I did not clean this wire to examine it. This relay is retained to the firewall by two screws that go through the firewall and retain on the opposite side if the firewall a steel brace for the windshield wiper grille. So the two units are side by side. My 1970 was built in July of 1970.

Jim, it sounds like your car is the same as mine-great. On the PW breaker, I assume it is mounted to 2 rubber mounted screws between the wiper door reinforcement you say the temp switch is mounted to-like the local car was, and the protrusion of the brake box-correct? Mounted there, is the switch on the left or right of the mounting screws? If to the left, kinda interfers with the wire clamp/bracket, but to the right almost touches the vac switch for the actuator. Then on the temp switch mounted to the reinforcement plate; do the wire come in from the left or right. If from the left like the local car, I will have to figure out why the wires are not long enough. Is there anyway you could attach a picture-as they say it would speak a 1000 words. Thanks, Mike

Mike I can get you a picture later today. Do not post pictures on the Technical Discussion. Can send one via e-mail though. My power window circuit breaker is still mounted like it was since my 70 was built at the factory, however the relay to the left of the power window breaker is not mounted with the two bolts/screws through the firewall because my windshield grille is off the car and the brace for the grille is not in place to retain the 2 bolts/screws. The relay is near the firewall supported by its wiring. Do you still want a picture of this? If you do send me an e-mail with your e-mail contact.

Jim, I guess not on the pic. However, do you remember which direction the wires came into the temp switch? If from the wiper (left), I need to re-position my main harness for the wires to reach. If to the right, I think it interferes a little with the wire retainer, but the wire reach.
              Thanks,
              Mike

Mike the wires are on the left. On my 70 there is not a lot of spare wiring coming from the wiring harness. Does yours have a special shaped plastic connector used to install on the switch? My 70's plastic connector is rather unique shaped.
