    Radio speakers

Hi Folks, trying to get at the speakers on my 69. One speaker does not work and as I look up under the passenger side I see some wire piggy backed on the green/black speaker wire. Whatever for? That speaker works however. But I know I need to remove the plastic piece with the louvers for the vent. Do I need to pull the dash piece down so I can work the plastic piece out? I did remove the add on wire and tape up where it was stripped back. This is an original low milege car that you would never guess someone jerked with the radio, but that never fails does it? Thanks, Ray

To remove the vent kick panel you may want to remove the sill plate and then remove the two screws on the RH out side of the RH dash so you can pull the map pocket dash toward you enough to get the vent panel out. Don't forget the far forward screw which is almost impossible to see without really getting under the dash that holds the vent panel.

Thanks Russ, making progress. It was the drivers speaker not working and that plastic piece came out pretty easy. Not to forget that Phillips screw way up front hidden by the high beam dimmer! I got a pair of upgraded speakers from Zip and I "tempoed" the connections and presto, the new drivers speaker worked. There is a bracket on the original speakers you have to take off and remove and place on the new speakers. So I drilled out the rivets and secured it on the speaker. I loaned my "electrical connect" kit to my son and will get it tomorrow so I can crimp the wire to the new spades and reassemble. I will turn my attention to the passenger side and take your advice about pulling out the dash. So far so good.

Just an update, I used the new upgrade 10 ohm speakers from Zip and they were a perfect fit and work way better than the original. I just had to drill out the rivets holding the strap to the speaker and used small nuts and bolts to secure it to the new speakers. I was careful to remove the plastic speaker/air cover and the long screw holding it up in front. Still took about 5 hours but a fun project. Nice to have that heater in my garage!
