    Steve;

    Thanks. I will check it more closely to assure I do the right thing.

      Thanks for your response. I will try to locate your thread on the L-79 Distributor.

      Basically, my shaft fits well in the housing with no detectable side play. My concern is for a section of about 1/2" long at the top part of the lower bushing area. There are several grooves that are perceptible to the naked eye in profile, and a few small ridges - none of which can be miced obviously. The shaft to either side of the area mics close to standard .489", with a little varnish above and polish wear below.

      You're overanalyzing this, Stu. Slight grooves from a piece of grit that got in there are not an issue. You just want to be sure there is no upset material on the shaft that can gouge the bushings. The mic says no if it reads the same on the bearing and non-bearing portions of the shaft, but to be sure lighly polish the bearing areas on the shaft with some 600 paper wetted with mineral spirits (same as what one would do on crankshaft journals) and put it back together.

      Procure shim kits as required to achieve the two to seven thou end play spec at assembly, and make sure the drive gear dimple is pointing the same direction as the rotor tip.

      If you can't come up with any 1960954 GM Distributor and Starter Motor Grease, use a full synthetic NGLI #2, like Mobil 1, for the upper bushing grease well and tach drive gears. If you removed the upper bushing grease seal without damage, reuse it. The felt washer can be cleaned in solvent, then wetted with engine oil and reused.

      That two year old thread is easy to find. Just search for threads stated by me and go down the page to December 2012. The title is obvious.

      Do it like above and your freshly overhauled single point distributor will easily outlive both of us.

        Duke;

        Thanks. I believe I have enough information to proceed and wrap this up. I'm missing out on a lot of good Vette cruising weather.
        I appreciate all your help.
        Looking forward to our regional winter meet here, now down at Lakeland where the winter EAA flyin happens. My sons are both commercial pilots so we go there for our aviation interests and now our NCRS meet as well.
