1964 A/C foil sticker #s for another NCRS member

Did the first A6 compressors use different stamped #s instead of the MM/DD/Y & shift.

I was sent a # 92NC1178 with a backplate A224, Jan 22,1963? Could that 92NC1178 be off the welded tags on the early compressors?
The question that I was asked was what # go's on a compressor FOIL STICKER with a compressor backplate code of
I243 Sept 24, 1963? Did they use a MM/DD/Y & shift that was about a week or so later on the foil stickers like the later compressors?
Something like 102331= Oct 23 1963 shift 1? Of coarse making sure the dates were not weekends, holidays, or during a strike!
I would like to help this person find the correct # for their sticker.

Dom, the A224 is probably Jan 22, 1964. The 92NC is later as I have a 71NC on my July 63 coupe.

There are several A6 compressors up on ebay. One I saw was built in January of 64. It has the foil on it. You may be able to get some numbers from ebay sales.

Dom --- seems that the fellow asking you is looking at the one on eBay (initially wanting $ 2400, later reduced by10%). The rear head cast date of A224 (Jan 22nd, 1964) and the foil serial # 92NC1178 match the photo in the listing, as Harry mentions. Can't say for sure, but I doubt they were using a serial code related directly to day/month/year/shift at that time. You could probably stamp anything of the format shown, and no one would dare challenge.

Here's two examples I have (not off Corvettes). The first has a head date close to your I_24_3 (Sept 24, 1963). Mine is J_18_3 (Oct 18th 1963; spacers added for clarity). Foil sticker is model 6550133, 3.75 lbs R-12 and serial # 85NC1885 the "1" is a bit roughed up.

Second one has a rear head date of I_15_4 (Sept 15th 1964). It must have been off some Pontiac, as the R-12 quantity is listed for a Tempest and shown as 3.75 lb, also for full-size Ponchos, 4.12 lb. This one has a foil sticker with model # 5910486 and serial # 65DC1312.

Of course, the main attraction of this eBay compressor is the large diameter (6_3/8") pulley used on L76 air cars in '64 and '65. His description lists '65 L79 also, but I'm not too sure on that. Nice original piece, nevertheless. There are 14 people watching this auction (I'm one of them , but not in the market as I have an NOS big pulley).

        Harry,
Right, it was 64, toooo much 63 on my mind.

        Wayne,
I see your point about stamping. Wonder when they started with the MM/DD/Y & shift? Also starting to use the foil stickers?
Wonder if they used the #s from the welded tags on the first foil stickers?

Dom, that compressor with the welded tag was used on Cadillac, Buick, Pontiac and any GM that ordered A/C. The bean counters wanted to save pennies anywhere. I would expect that A/C was to become standard on many models so a few cents saved on the welding and a simple foil tag made the profit better.

I hope I didn't mislead anyone when I said I was sent a #92NC1178 with a back plate A224! I was sent the # only as to make sense out of it for a compressor I am working on. The way I wrote it made it sound like I had the compressor. Sorry.

Hello For some reasom my 65 coupe came with 63 exhaust manifolds and a 63 compressor and 63 style mounting bracket. The casting date on the head is c 4 3. It has a welded metal tag with the s/n 68 NC 3264 and Model number 6550133. it looks to have about a 5.5" pulley. there is another metal tag that lists the charge as 3.75 lbs.
              Hope this helps
              Bill

The compressor labels and whatever shots you can get of the compressor bracket.

                      Thanks
