Lakeland Questions - First Regional I've Ever Attended for Judging

This will be my first ever NCRS judging event. My 1961 is an OK car but it still has some things that are wrong but I can't possibly fix them before next week. This is also the first car I have ever restored.

    My questions are:
what are the things I should focus on over the next 4 days
should I do a full service lube (I am driving about 105 miles from Englewood to Lakeland)
if I do a lube should I leave some grease showing
if I have an issue that requires repair is there a vendor that I should go to
is there a social gathering place for Wednesday and Thursday night

And of course are there other things I should have asked?

The biggest area to focus on now is the ops section of judging. If you haven't already done so, download the judging sheets and go through the ops and make sure everything works. Do it again and again.

Your inference is that the car is being judged. The area that you will loose points the fastest is the Operations Check. Download the Judging Sheets, then make sure everything on the Operations section works. Those are high point loss items if they fail.

Don't worry about leaving grease showing, wipe it off.

There is a reception on Thursday as I recall and the Banquet at the end. Check the schedule on-line or in your driveline.

      Good Luck......................

The biggest advice I can give is relax and have FUN, and remember that the sun will rise in the morning no matter what you score. ........GOOD LUCK !!!!

Oh, forgot to mention that, " they trailer horses not horsepower." It will be nice to see some bugs in the radiator.

Does your parking brake warning light work correctly ?
Windshield wipers ? Windshield washers - if they squirt do they have the correct number of "drying wipes" ?
Those are some of the fragile things on these cars that crap out when you need 'em most....
Heater/defroster blower (if you have one) ? If you have the correct headlights - have you installed them ?

NCRS decal, battery cut-off switch and small fire extinguisher worth 10 bonus points. Will echo the others on checking and double checking the Operations Section. Those items are 25 points each.

If you have a Wonderbar radio, make sure you preselect some local stations that get strong reception and even though it don't look cool, have your antenna raised up all the way. A good exterior judge will see if all 3 sections move too. Does yours. Hope you have a ceramic ring in your lighter too. Lots of little 1's and 2's that add up but in the end you will have a "work sheet" for the next time. RELAX and have fun. Good Luck.

                  John,

All good advice and hints here. I'd like to add to the excitement for you. IMO OPs check is so important so concentrate on that as priority now. All those little things that you've identified along the way on the forums are good to help the overall objective too, but may be minor in the grand scheme of things.

I'm signed up to OJ '67 BB's on Friday and '61's on Saturday. I'm restoring a '67 BB and a '61 over the winter so I hope to learn more and more in that process. I'm looking forward to assisting the judges with their needs. I have to abstain from any input and merely be a pencil and clipboard holder for the judges. I enjoy doing that both to help them get through a tough day's schedule with so many cars to do. At the same time it's a great learning tool for me. I'm looking forward to being a OJ when your car is being judged and meeting you.

Are you taking the 769 or the 17/35 up to Arcadia, then through Wauchula up into Bartow up to Lakeland? I was in North Port, Port Charlotte and Venice on a day trip not long ago from the east coast and took 70 and 17/35 down to 769 in my C6. Nice ride.

Have a safe and enjoyable ride. Good Luck. Please try to remember to have fun. Learning is the fun part too.

Re: Lakeland Questions - First Regional I've Ever Attended for Judging

Everything in my car works from the radio to the washers and every light bulb.

These are Delco shocks. But I should peel the sticks off best as I can and paint them semi-gloss? If that helps with points I'll do it. I did the exhaust system yesterday with high temp black paint - but all I could get locally was flat black. But this does look better.

I'll read the radio manual and figure out how to set it since I just have it tuned to one station. The antenna goes all the way up but I never use it that way.

I was planning on going up the back way via Hardee County 663 through Arcadia based on Google maps. Is 17/35 a better choice (I may live in Englewood but driving through this part of the state will be a new experience for me)? I rather have a more sedate pace and not worry about the high speed people on I75. And if I have any issues I won't be on the side of a freeway.

Thanks for the suggestions. Please keep them coming.

John, I'm not familiar with 663. 769 and 17/35 was a nice cruise through Arcadia, but then I went east on 70 over to the coast where I live.

You can get some street views on Google maps. Either way looks like a nice cruise. When you get out there, on the way to Arcadia no matter what road you take, you will only see palm tress, pines trees, cows, ranches and turf farms.

At night when I was out there coming home on rte 70, my wife saw a 300+ lb feral hog 10 feet from me to the right. I was clippin' along at about 70 when I passed it. Try not to drive at night going home. I'd suggest staying over and heading home Sunday.

The weather looks nice Thursday for a ride up. Hmmm, just checked out 663. Looks like you head n-east on 769 out past 75 then up 661 to 663, which takes you through Ona(don't blink for a nanosecond). Wow is that desolate.

It looks like this for about 50 miles until you get to Mulberry.

You may want to consider the other route through Wauchula. It a little further east but many more services for pit/fuel stops if you need any.

Car ran OK for having a bad plug - thank goodness the rain held off. Going to get new plugs today until I see if I should get real AC 44 plugs or perhaps a slighter warmer plug.

Get warmer plugs John....45s if nothing else. I'd run 46s if I could but they are not to be had...I run NGK-XR4s in my '61 but they won't pass judging. Those dual quad 270hps tend to run rich so you need the extra heat range to keep things cleaned up...

John, I use the AC R45 in all of the SB engines. Napa gets them for me.
