    '69 512 block questions

According to Covin's ...by the numbers, 512's came out in Oct. of '68 with "tall" dist. towers and date casting on right bank.

512's were re-cast on Nov. 17, 1969 with "short" dist. towers and date casting on rear right bellhousing flange.

I am looking at a "tall" tower 512 4 bolt block dated C 6 9, but, the date casting is on the rear bellhousing flange.

    How is this possible??

    Thanks,
    George

    Re: '69 512 block questions

George, we at the Camaro Research Group (of which Alan is also a member) discussed this several months ago. Alan was using the original GM records and apparently they were incorrect. The actual change over date was much earlier than what they had recorded. I don't remember the exact dates because my computer crashed a month or so ago and took all that stuff with it, but I seem to remember the time frame for the change over was in early March, 1969. There was an overlap during that time where some blocks have the date on the side while others have the date on the flange, so it must have been related to the casting molds. Some got changed quicker than others.

But anyway, early March, 1969 is the actual time frame of the change.

      Ed,
      Thanks for the info.
So, just to be clear, there were "tall" tower 512 blocks cast with the casting date located on the rear bellhousing flange as early as early March 1969. Correct?

Again, I've lost all my notes so I'm going by memory, but yes, I believe that is correct.
